The Combo Club

And the saddest thing is, Morrighan, is the tone is fantastic when working according to the blueprint. I may never hear it again, but for those owners who’ve had no problems, I’ll bet they smile every time they flip the switch. Me? I cower in the corner when I flip the toggle and it goes BANG! :dead:

And so  we have NuTube tech in the foxy Voxy amp
without a Post-EQ DI so it's kind of not so useful. Useful like the 500 watt NuTube combo that doesn't exist?

To hear tell, the Orange Little Bass Thing is a clean counterpart to the Orange Terror. Likely I'll see the Joyo pedal first. I have clean. There's no telling how just clean it is until I A/B it with the Ampeg BA108v2+ and the Elf. It's a pretty righteous clean IMO (which is one reason I have no GAS for MarkBass).

Just offhand, what currently produced combo amps have a tube preamp?

I almost pulled the trigger on one of these that have tube preamps…

Late response, Lady M, but this GOF fell asleep in his chair and just woke up. Lord, it’s time to retire!

You are correct, as usual, I have made some less-than-stellar purchases over the years, though I am gonna try the Vox rig with a mic in front of it with my guitar and am thinking that may be its best chance of continuing to live in this house.

Along with my fails though I also purchased a 40-lb (a toy compared to your Peavey) behemoth modeling amp with 800 watts on tap and everything from late 50s to modern tones wrapped up in a single dial, or through my iPhone.

Then there’s the right-pound paperweight that produces bass, and decent bass at that, outta two four-inch speakers and with the neutrality of the Swiss, is a perfect platform to create tone with. Also looking at it as possible guitar amp in a dual role.

Finally, there’s your Ampeg BA108v2+ which pretty much goes without saying, as valuable a practice tool as there ever was one.

So I’d call it a draw, other then the fact when my son popped over this afternoon to drop his five-string over for a setup said, “Damn Dad, you got a lotta junk in this room.” Kids...ya gotta love ‘em.

In summary, for every Acoustic combo amp covered in goo, there’s a sweetheart at Studio 1215 that’s ready to help me create some beautiful music too. Him and I listened to some home recordings while he was here and I almost got choked up at how good my bass tone came through the songs I played him, and played through most of the amps mentioned above. Except the Orange. It’s a pile of :poop: right now.

Thanks for forcing me to re-evaluate the current herd. It’s good enough for me to hold with for the future while the search for a pure guitar amp will begin shortly. Maybe it’ll be an Orange.

Nah. ;)

I've been racking the practice hours up a lot since I got my little amp, but it was really frustrating this evening. Everything sounded wrong, and I kept playing everything wrong, so I gave up and watched YouTube bass videos through my amp. They still sounded good.

I suppose playing after being out for 12 hours is not when I'm at my best, so I'll just have to give it a go again tomorrow.

Your last sentence explains it. But like anything else you have good days and bad. Yesterday while playing I kept over reaching and my nail was hitting the next string and I kept clanging notes on the D string for some reason. Ugh!

Taking a stoopid wildazz guess the modeling amp doesn't have a preset for a silversides Peavey.

L, I’m sure you’ll be reading some wise posts ahead so sit back and take them in. Westy is right, some days I shock myself how fluid my fingers are I am confident that Geddy Lee is looking over his shoulder, and then there are days when my fingers like hunks of brick that wouldn’t know a fretboard from a surfboard!

I know this, if I don’t play semi-regularly my rhythm is nowhere when I pick it up again. On days you stink, watch YT videos or better yet, take up the Cajon like I’m gonna do. There’s an unwritten law that you can stink at two instruments the same day!

Stop beating yourself up, grab your bass, and play something you’re familiar with that’s fun. Go get ‘em! :hyper:

Well I can only speak for myself but I’ve found taking a couple of days off is nerve wracking lol. It feels like I’m gonna forget everything. But maybe that’s just because I’m 60 now lol. But what I found when I’m forced to not play for a couple of days is I’m fresh. My hands are rested. The things I was struggling with are no longer a struggle.

For me when I bump up against a difficult new lick or some part I’m having a hard time with I always say it’s akin to banging your head against a wall. Again. Again. Again. Then you put it down and walk away. And the next day when you pick up your bass/guitar somehow magically your on the other side of that wall you were banging your head against. What you couldn’t do yesterday you can now do today. Magic! You’ve earned that piece. Then soon enough your banging your head against another wall. Eventually if you go through that process enough you pile up enough wins to get pretty good at it.

Recently I wanted to learn the Barney Miller theme song. I spent a couple of days on it. Then on the 3rd day it was just there. Available to me. Like magic! (And some hard work) every time I pick up the bass now it’s just there. I’ve earned that “badge.”

I’ve been going at the bass essentially non-stop for about 3 years now. 1-3 hours a day just about everyday. I’m making progress. However now I’ve developed an issue in my left (fret board) hand. An older guitar playing friend of mind thinks it may be tendinitis. I’ve never had that issue to deal with. It’s probably because I’m playing too much. Ugh! And on top of that while trimming a rose bush I got a tiny piece of thorn in my left hand/fret board middle finger that hurts like hell. I know I need to stop playing for a few days. To give my hands a rest. But it’s like this obsession. I just love playing so much I can’t put it down. But I know I should. Because I know when I give myself a couple of days off and come back to it I’m always fresher and playing better than ever. maybe that approach/break every once in a while will be helpful for you too @Luftkopf.

The work in our practice group makes me feel like my fingers are dancing on the entire fretboard. My practice routine is strict and focused. The nature of the material means if I'm not playing, I'm thinking about it. There's written homework :hyper:

Eww...homework and I are ready to enter divorce court for a soon-to-be permanent vacation. Maybe call it something else next time like funwork!

I had an off night last night too. Must be the cosmos messing with us. It happens.

Teacher burnout, but that's my hypothesis. Doc, I just finished my fifth set of papers and am as free as a bird until tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM. Maybe some holiday prep bass playing, catching some NFL games, taking a tiny nap...all of my faves for a Sunday afternoon. Hope things are going well up north for ya.

Things are good! I am working today and I also will be attending my son's birthday. The kid's term papers starting rolling in this week with a week and a half of classes left. It will be a bit intense for the next couple of weeks, but I will get through it. That's what us teachers do!

I am also jamming with my new three piece tonight! So it is a busy, yet good, day.
