The Combo Club

You added a button to your 108? :hyper:

The button reads:
Apathy sucks
Nobody for President
1980

Wavy Gravy campaigned as Nobody, and the button was a gift. It lived on the grill cloth of the old Peavey :woot: because everyone who came to our shows kind of expected that vibe from our band. Or brought some of that vibe with them a the door.

People used to give me buttons  This button found a place on the ancient strap

and the strap is about to be rehabilitated. The mojo of the old MM logo and the fabric are donor bits for a cut-to-length leather strap. Once you know how you wear your bass, it's not as if it's going to change. All an adjustable strap means (to me) is the same thing can be sold to everyone.

Pretty exciting to me to have a completely rehabilitated instrument and original rehabilitated strap. The PJB combo and extension just kick it up a notch on stage

Good morning, all! Where the heck are we at in the Amps and Cabs forum? I couldn't find the club after five pages of dedicated searching. Oh well, I found it and it looks as if there was a lot of button discussion the past day or two. Must mean life is good overall for the congregation. I had a hectic week, but am being rewarded with a hectic weekend! The good news is only two days of school next week and my first decent non-Covid vacation since august. Yahoo! The longest stretch of the school year without interruption is about over and, admittedly, my crew is way ahead of schedule. In other words, it's been a fantastic year so far. I just hope my education brothers and sisters are having as decent a year too.

Instead of blurring your vision with one looooong post, I've decided to cut slice it into halves. Right now I'm rocking the Markbass combo with my Fender cabinet even though my Orange Terror Bass showed up on Thursday, supposedly all fixed and ready to party. I decided to give her a spin last night before slumber, hooked it up properly, leaving it on standby to give the 12AX7 a chance to thoroughly warm-up, and proceeded to noodle a bit with my Beatle bass.

It lasted 30 seconds.

While it sounded tasty the first 29 seconds, a fizzing sound came through the Rumbler's tweeter and began to get louder. Then after a few seconds of that, the sound faded away into the night not to be heard again. It'd been damn funny had it not been so sad. I've been without said amp head since September and the boys in Orange-Atlanta had given it a clean bill of health by the replacing of parts and the testing of it on the bench.

So what the heck? I did nothing different, used quality cables (the same ones I use that I know work fine), and ran it in the clean channel and -6 dB mode, to begin with. Seriously, what more could I do and all I got out of it was 30 seconds. Being, as they told me, it was juuust outta of warranty, I paid $78 for parts, labor, and return shipping. I personally didn't think that was too bad, especially if it was going to operate perfectly for the next 20 years, but for what happened last night.

I emailed my good friend, Kaelin, and attached the pics I'm attaching here of the exact same cap that exploded the last time. I've explained the loud (and I mean loud) bang upon turning on from standby to kick out the jams, but he said that's normal. Well, if that's normal I'd hate to hear it on a bad day. We're all used to the capds filling up when engaging, but this one is ridiculous.

I've already packed it back up in the freshly-used box that I kept in waiting...uh-huh. My guess is she'll be on her way down south over T'giving break where she can sit until early 2022. No holiday usage for this guy.

Well, I-for one-have all the combos I'll ever need, especially the way gigs have been going(or not), so nothing new on that front. Tonight was booked months ago for the annual Finnish Club Gala-which is cancelled due to international travel restrictions (there is a large Finnish population in Lake Worth, FL). There are a lot of of folks that come over from Finland every year for this function that can't b/c Covid, so it got 86'ed-for the second year in a row. We'd been doing the gig for ~6 years.
I s'pose I could take the opportunity to practice some. Or at least f---* with some different EQ settings on my Rumble(s)[see recent posts in Rumble Club]. Then again, it's almost time for football and hockey on TV. I guess my day is planned.

And the holiday usage I'm talking about is a slight return to normal where it looks as if the trio of players who brought the masses to their feet two years ago with stirring renditions "Rudolph" and "Jingle Bells," were going to be allowed to do so in December, and I planned on bringing the Terror Bass to the gym stage. Nothing says the happy holidays better than an amp head decked out in orange and saying "Terror" on the front. But no, I'll be either using the Fender Stage 800 (more volume and with lots of tonal options) or the Ampeg Rocket Bass 112 (I think still enough power with DI too and the classic warm vibe that would be perfect with Santa). I'm gonna think about it over the next couple of weeks.

Hi GP! Long time, no hear. Probably more me than you. Have fun playing for the Finns. I hear they're great tippers with herring. Seriously, it sounds like a lot of fun. I vote for messing around with settings because you never know what might spark new creativity. Even my fave tones need a revision after a while at least for me.

We have a different gig for the resident Finn population on 12/5-if it doesn't get cx'ed too.

I know, SR. My anal-retentive tendencies rarely let me down with not hooking up something correctly or using suspect cabling, etc. I really wonder if they actually hooked it up to a cabinet that challenges the amp as opposed to a dummy load on the bench. I'm not an amp builder, but I've been plugging in equipment since the late sixties, having done pretty decently overall. This one has me stymied about this one though. I know the fix-it crew down south has good intentions, but as I told Kaelin, I spent seven for the head and now another 80 for the repair work/shipping. This is getting to be quite the expensive boat anchor!

And here's the killer: I replaced the TB with my Markbass combo to the Rumble using the same cabling, hooked it all back up exactly as I did the Orange, turned it on, and after it clicked quietly to power, began noodling around like it was nobody's business. I think my tube days are done. At the risk of sounding like sour grapes, I'd rather play through solid state, both bass and guitar, enjoy the cooler, drier tones, and know it'll pretty much last a good long time. Heck, even my Stage 800, a walking computer in a box, has performed flawlessly for the past 3 or 4 years.

Hey Doc! Hope things in Canadian education are going well for you. Yeah, it's a wicked pisser, but we've all experienced something like this at one time or another. #2 asked me this morning if a large number of F-bombs were dropped in the music room last night, and surprisingly, I said no. It's almost like I anticipated this happening and was ready for it. I opened up the shipping box so gingerly, you'd have thought M's Music Man was in there!

Thankfully, I have enough other amps to keep things going, and the current Markbass/Fender duo is one of my favorites together. I can run just the combo, just the 115 cab, or if I'm in the mood for leather and whips, both in my small room at the same time. My bass sounds great and I even tried the Tele through the combo last night. It was passable but I think would sound better with my multi-effects pedal ahead of it. I still have yet to try the Foxy Voxy or Phil Jones combo, mainly because I haven't done a setup as of yet and am waiting until the break to do so. Why not yet? Because, as with this weekend, I have a weekend's worth of correcting, grading, and planning to do. That's why I need Thanksgiving...to give thanks for time off! :hyper:

Speaking of work, I'm heading to virtual school now. I'll catch up with your thoughts, comments, and words of hope later. See ya, CC!

Oops, I forgot to post the pics. Here ya go. Look for the opened cap and the brown goo creeping out. Bingo!

Talked out of my Orange Terror. I may yet pop a Joyo Orange Juice on the pedalboard for something other than Ampeg tones. But also considering an Ampeg Optocomp, and there's not room on the board for both.

Right now it doesn't matter much for Zoom. True, I get a nice fat, pushed "tube" tone at low volume. And not there to impress anybody, and unlikely anyone there can be impressed. What we got today is a solid week of work. As work goes, it's really, really good work IMO.

Colour my ̶W̶o̶r̶l̶d̶ tone orange or silver or tweed
I may be the only one who knows
But I care

And the saddest thing is, Morrighan, is the tone is fantastic when working according to the blueprint. I may never hear it again, but for those owners who’ve had no problems, I’ll bet they smile every time they flip the switch. Me? I cower in the corner when I flip the toggle and it goes BANG! :dead:
