The Combo Club

Well there is my technique. It's a private link. But I'm sure it will get pulled down if it has not already. I wanted to record myself to try what @Morrighan suggested to see visual feedback on my technique. I will use this again. It's first takes so warts and all. (I forgot the end to "Something" lol because it's been weeks since I played that) I have not played in 3 days trying to rest my hand so there's that. And also the rose bush thorn in my left middle finger still hurts ouch. The tendinitis is still there but slightly better. BTW my ring finger on my left hand does not bend at the tip. It was a stupid incident with a knife and some friends when I was a kid. I do the best I can to work around it. It does help with my hammer-ons lol. Sometimes I have that thumb pinned on the neck where it belongs and some times I'm over the top. I don't know I think most people do a combination of this depending on what their doing.

Nicely done!
Warts and all is how we learn, right?

As I leave you this early morning, the first of five glorious days on vacation, I'm attaching a couple of pics of my latest instrument to show up on my door. It weighs less than the gigbag it came in, but actually has a really deep bass thump, and isn't that really all that matters? This, a Christmas gift from the Rev (so I can add percussion to our recordings) should serve its purpose here in the music room studio and my holiday gymnasium gig in another month. Dang, I love this music thang!

Good evening/morning to all. I'll be in and out throughout the rest of the week, playing music, eating delicious holiday fare, and teasing four grandchildren on Friday. Enjoy this week, everyone!

Nice addition! I'm trying to convince a drummer friend to pick one up so we can do a nice acoustic jam together. His normal kit is at the home of the guitarist for their band, so he'd need a little something else for a living-room jam session.

I’m just going to go full New York sharp cheddar and say that this year I am truly thankful for TalkBass and especially the Combo Club. This site has been an essential source of information, encouragement and entertainment for me over the last year and half. It’s truly the best part of the internet.

Ummm. Cabot Vermont Cheddah for me…

A tough decision in the cheese section, and ultimately selected smoked Gouda today. Thursday is me and

as usual. The last time our whole family was together was when Pan Am flight 103 went down over Lockerbie. Odin is my only family now. Two living sisters remain. Somewhere. One hasn't spoken to me in seven years, and the other got [Kafka] dissappeared into the bureaucracy [/Kafka] following her deportation. Thankful my own passport is in order, is what I'm thankful for. Too long in port means trouble.

Good practice today. Bass keeps me [GrainOfSalt] sane [/GrainOfSalt] and TB fills in the blanks like bass Mad Libs.

Lucky for us, M, you’re part of our Combo Club family and that means you’re stuck with us every Thanksgiving. I think I’ve read more complimentary posts appreciating your practice insight.

If I had the time, I could tell you why I’m thankful for knowing you all here on TB. You each have your own vibe and as soon as I begin reading a post, I know just who it is. You’re all special to me and is what makes this club so much fun.

Sure, we don’t always agree or sometimes play as nice together at recess as we could, but there’s not a one of you members I’d ever want to leave for the Cactus Club at TalkPlants.

So a big Happy Thanksgiving to one and all here at the Combo Club! I’m spending the day tomorrow working on basses and guitars, recording my cajon, eating ham, and chasing #2 around the house. What are you all doing? Post here and make us smile.

With love and respect...save me a leg,

FL :bassist:

I've always called it "butterflies in my stomach." From playing in front of an audience back in the '60s, all the way up until today. At first back then, I thought it was fear, like riding a huge creaky wooden roller coaster! But, a couple years ago, when my protegé said he was beginning to get over his "jitters" of playing in front of people, I told him, "No! Don't do that! That's the musical mojo you need to play well and creatively!" As we talked more, he began to understand.

Yeah, adrenaline is pro'lly the right technical term. But, people understand "butterflies" more easily. I prefer to call it mojo! Hey, where do you think those cherished vintage instruments got it from? :D
.

Amen, Doggie! You can use butterflies or mojo just as easily. It’ll be 15 minutes before getting on stage and I’m taking deeper breaths. It’s scary but also exhilarating and that’s the part I love. It sounds as if you do too. :)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!
Back East with family. Two days in NYC, a day near Boston- now driving up to Stowe, Vermont for Thanksgiving- hope everyone is happy and safe!!

My Oma came to Ellis in 1909. From Balingen in Germany.
Bruins hockey game on Sunday- then back to AZ. :hyper:

Happy Thanksgiving, Tele! Beautiful and important pictures that remind us that not long ago people from around the world worked their a$$es off to get here to live, with our warts and all.

Wait a minute...they still do. God bless the USA and all Americans around the world. Enjoy your trip my bass/guitar brotha!

Awesome post, WBB! On behalf of everyone here, we appreciate those kind words and agree with every one of them. Keep on rocking, good buddy! :woot:

Thanks, RR! What you wrote should be all you need to convince your skins player that he needs one of these little darlings. Seriously, had I been smart enough years ago, I’d have been playing one of these.

Now I have to bring my chops up a bit but I could immediately tell upon the first crack how it’s gonna fit in. And the little bugger will be gigging (well, one gig) in less than a month too!

Between that and my foot tambourine and egg shakers purchased, I feel I’ve enough to add a lot to my current bare bones recordings. Even #2 and I were playing percussion together to Elton John’s Daniel today and we had a blast.

Tell him it’s the best money spent in 2021!

That’s interesting @Miles_ONeal so then why are there thousands of Beatles lessons videos on bass on YouTube? I tried to have the music way down low in the background and keep the bass prominent out of respect for someone’s copywrite I get that. Musicians have been ripped off enough. But that seems harmless. But they did not pull it down it was just my settings were wrong for it.
I have no idea why YT does anything. I just understand the IP law.

Oh man, I'd forgotten about the whole adrenaline thing. I studied voice at uni, back in the day, and there was not much in this world I hated more than doing recitals. The adrenaline always made my voice tighter, in a bad way, and it took a massive effort to open up properly. :dead:

I was always better in choir, and avoided being looked at when they were handing out solo parts...

I'm just going to play my bass in my room for a while. What happens later is a problem for future me.
