The Combo Club

Easter gig at a local watering hole last night. Peavey TNT 115S, got for a price I'm ashamed to disclose, short-money trip to the tech, and it's *the* gig machine. I don't much mind the 90lbs for what it delivers- pretty brainless dialing-in and it's clean, retro rock tone, punchy and not-too sweet. Might be the best sounding amp I've used in recent years, except for the big rig (Fender Bassman Pro 300/Ampeg fridge).
Gonna put some side-handles on it- as usual, Peavey cheaped-out on the small stuff! Try getting this tank around with just a top-handle, lol...

Yes, that comes to mind!

I just downsized from a GK rig to an Ashdown Studio 15 combo. Very light, 15" neo speaker, 300 watts. First gig, thoroughly disappointed. Pulled it apart, lined the cab, very little difference. Pulled it apart again... woah! The speaker was labelled 150 watts at 4 ohms. How can I put 300 watts into a 150 watt speaker? Got a 300 watt, 8 ohm Eminence Deltalite 1525 and installed it. Holy cow! Punch, thump, grunt, volume... all the required superlatives are there in spades, and only about 3 or 4 lbs heavier than the original. Second gig, rocked it! Not that I need it, but I now have the option of running an extension cab.

Nice looking Les Paul! I’ve been craving one of those for a while, how do you like it?

For me it sits in a place in a mix that isn't my go-to. I find the Thunderbird has Voice that suits me way more. It's punchier, stronger in the mids and translates my intent better.

The Les Paul feels bigger, the playability is a tad more sluggish to me. In its own right that's great, but I find myself leaning toward something else... The 'Bird (Epiphone Classic Pro) is a consistent delivering performer, my favorite these days.

would you say the LP is stronger on the low end or the high end?

One person on each side to lift it? It just looks heavy :)
That's a possibility now. I can carry it fine as long as I can get a reasonable purchase, and the side handles are that. That top handle is as bad a design as I've seen on a heavy, large object. No one carries a 90 lb suitcase.

The grille is next...

This also has just a top handle. Used to use it for bass(keyboard amp). Weighed it once, don't recall, not gonna do it again right now. Sounded great and I'd lay the Thunderbird case on top and roll them into the gig. [casters by me]

You're going to carry that beast by the grille?
