The Combo Club

I haven't owned or played through a combo amp in at least 15 years... I picked one up on a whim just because it was offered to me for next to nothing and I have been messing around with it for hours upon hours the last two days. I seriously think I will be using this as much as my tube rig haha. All small shows for sure. Our next gig is on the 30th and that will be the combo try out!

Over in Thunderbird Club, I had mentioned-more than once-that the only pedal I use is an EHX Micro POG. Some people asked if I could post a video, so I made one but couldn't get it to upload to TalkBass. If interested on hearing it-and the Kasino, go on YT, IMG3448/EHX Micro POG demo.
On a different note, the new Peaveys look very interesting but I just can't give them any of my money after the "Undercover Boss" episode. I'm sure other companies have done similar things, but sometimes ignorance is bliss.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, could you summarize this particular episode of UB. I’ve never really watched the show, though I do what the premise is, and you’ve referenced it numerous times in previous posts, so GP, what did the bosses of Peavey actually do to receive such wrath?

Black widow!
Great score.

Yeah, the venue was a good size at a capacity of a couple hundred I'm sure, but there was likely only about 20 folks there when we played.

I work at a small college of about 1100 students per year. We have an interdisciplinary conference every year. Three of us are profs at the college and one guy is a millwright in town. We play for fun and unfortunately only practised once since early December. Nonetheless we sounded okay playing wise. The mix was okay too. I suppose I'm a little old school now. I haven't really played since 92, so I'm used to relying on the backline. We should have turned down our amps and let the soundtech mix our sound but I didn't have much time to think about it for set up. I think our sound check was about 5 minutes. We were not the main show, but just there to close out the day.

My highlight was actually when a group my students did a panel on the ethics of human experimentation. The Dean came and the students rocked it way harder than we did!

Great take, my fellow educator. It’s cool to see our professional passion occasionally mix with our non-professional passion. Sounded like you had fun anyway.

BlacknWhite, welcome to our humble abode, the Combo Club! How’d ya pull the strings to get your abbreviated name on the grill? Very cool.

If you’re interested in a membership number let me know. Haven’t added anyone new lately, and unless you already belong, we’ll get a number for that Peavey combo.

From my experience if you're looking for dirt dialing up gain on a PJB amps you're likely disappointed. The grit available with the Vox is well explored thanks to @Killed_by_Death

Interesting to observe Phil Jones Bass offerings with 7 inch drivers. IMO very attractive.
I just saw Phil announced that he's got a distribution deal with Warwick now.

Thanks man. I'd be happy to take a number. :bassist:

It doesn't get much simpler than this. Ibanez SR400EQM, TC Polytune II mini tuner pedal, and a GK MB 210II combo for amplification and sound. Bar gigged every week since last August and no sign of letting up anytime soon. So give me a number.

You got it, Clark Word! I’ll take care of both you and B & W after homework. Thanks for checking us out and signing up. Sweet-looking did ya got there. GK is a strong brand, no doubt.

Thanks!

Been very pleased with both the GK and the Ibby. Only thing I would change about it, is I'd add a GK CX 210 extension cab, of which I will do eventually. Don't need it. But part of playing is looking the part. And adding that cab will just make the rig look bigger and meaner

Plus it will open the combo up from 350 watts @ 8 ohms to 500 watts @ 4 ohms.

BlacknWhite and Clark Word, by the power vested in me from the Combo Club Council & 'Lil Vegas Keno Club, I hereby award with membership numbers 123 and 124, respectively. Along with your numbers come the many benefits that club members are entitled to, but the best one is what you see below...our secret decoder ring and grenade launcher (just okayed the update and am very happy with the results). Show the ring at the clubhouse door to get in, but use the launcher anytime someone disses either one of our members and/or their favorite combo amp. Congratulations! :hyper:

Hartley Peavey more or less turned operations over to his(I think)son-in-law who sent as much as possible overseas and put a bunch of local people outta work. This after talking with pride of keeping people employed in MS. I'm aware that other companies of all kinds have done the same but their methods just really felt like a 'hose' job. They still say "Proudly engineered in (wherever), Mississippi". Yeah, and manufactured in China. So's lotsa other stuff but the others don't "wave the flag". Just rubbed me the wrong way. The older Peavey stuff I have is built like a tank and works well but I don't feel they deserve any more of my bu$ine$$. I'm sure they care about my mini protest(NOT!). Plus I'm happy with the gear I have so to them I say ":spit:"
