but the Phil Jones Compact 4 is rated 30 Hz - 15 KHz, so ... just saying ... The PJB BG-400 Suitcase Compact combo amp is a C4 with an amp. Eight of these tiny drivers is pretty astonishing to me and we have folks out there running a pair of C8 cabs, each rated 25 Hz - 15 KHz.

Plenty of very favourable reviews on this little amp especially paired with the C4 extra cab (if I have that right Morri). Even upright players have found it ideal so I would imagine there wouldn't be an issue with a 5 string bass. Morri could probably shed more light on the 5 string issue but from what ive read the Phil Jones Bass BG-400 Suitcase Compact gets great reviews all round.I'm sorry

As for this little black duck, only play four-stringers so can't offer insight there.
The new "budget" Phil Jones cabs use 7 inch drivers and a tweeter for the same frequency response as the C4. Apparently there's some serious math going on inside as the Cab 27 and Cab 47 require special porting owing to the velocity of the speaker excursion.
It's all voodoo to me, as a longtime member of the stacked 15 club.

Combo Numero Uno is the Ampeg BA108v2. And here are a few syllables about it:
This is a kicking combo! Ah yes, a massive 20 watts and an 8 inch driver means no Maxell advertisement with this one. It's a practice amp. Now I dunno about you, but my practice volumes aren't exactly thunderous. Likely there's enough meat behind the knobs it can hold its own against an acoustic guitar in a coffee shop. Won't rattle anybody's hat off but that's not the intention for this amp.
What the little Ampeg brings is a sweet lotta Ampeg tone, a great headphone out and an AUX In with its own volume knob. That's actually pretty important to me as there's no telling the volume of whatever it is I plug in.
One of them things that gets plugged in is a Tascam GB-10. Little headphone amp with all the trimmings. Not sure I can call the Tascam a combo amp but it sure is loaded with useful features.
Which brings us up to the combo amp of droolage, the Phil Jones Bass BG-400 Suitcase Compact. This is the "everything inna box" solution. Two inputs means it's easy to double should one be a doubler. Each channel has its own preamp section. Rad. And an effects loop, and and and this is a major amp of no mean amplitude. Pair it with a Compact 4 extension cab (as I do) and that's a whole lot of loud. 500 watts loud through eight 5 inch drivers.
Ever have the pleasure of driving a Mercedes Benz from the 60s? You know how in one of those things when you push a button or engage a switch there is a clearly discernable "thunk" that feels as solid as a brick s-house? That's what the controls on the Phil Jones feel like to me.
One might argue that's a lot of dosh for 300 watts in a combo that doesn't reach my knees. For the same coin it's possible to own a rig that is powerful enough to fry chickens in the barnyard. But that's not the point with the Phil Jones gear. With the C4 it gets scary loud enough as it is.
And suits me fine

Hey Biggie, see what ya started now? I'm currently at three combos: the M'bass 801, Rumble 100, and Stage 800. That darn Stage amp has me so wowee-zoweed I may never buy another bass amp again. Oh, here's a quiz!

It's true, Biggie, I've seen the numbers, BUT if you're comparing the PJB to your favorite 8 X 10 cab with like frequency response, you'll probably notice a little difference. Of course, the pain in your back coming from hauling such a large cab as opposed to M's BG-400 might make a bigger difference. To each his (or her) own!
Yeah, I'd like to audition his new 50-watt combo. It looks to be half of the Session 100, but me thinks there may be some tonal differences too. What's nifty is the price for it as compared to other PJB product.
Hello folks, even though I'm beyond exhausted and ready to drop for seven hours, I had to stop by my favorite digs for a nightcap. Giff, it's nice to see you've made it consecutive days now. I've still got Ghost in my prayers, and I'm wondering when Bigs is gonna challenge M to a Battle of the Low Note!
Me, I just finished one of the roughest weeks all year and it was only four days! I enjoyed my first evening not correcting essays in almost a week and wrapped up Family Day today with about a good 25-30 guests in the classroom along with the kidlings. We had a lot of fun though with a rocks/minerals scavenger hunt as the highlight. I wished them all well as they left and the staff could begin our overdue four-day break. If I had to go to one more meeting...
On a really neat note, our school district is looking to host a one-week summer camp for those interested in doing projects led by our teachers. The coordinator of this extended-learning project asked for ideas and I submitted "Summer Rock Band." I ripped off School of Rock and will offer to up to a half-dozen students (middle and high school, I believe) the opportunity to play their instruments (guitar, bass, and drums) in a band-like environment. By the end of the week, we'll play a few songs that were worked on and maybe record them for posterity.
The coordinator seemed really excited about this session and will let me know after they lock down some dates; possibly the third week of June. The coolest thing, besides playing AC DC with former students, is I'll earn a $500 stipend. Gee, should I save it or spend it? Already told Mrs. Fearless Leader that if those in charge accept my idea I'll have to pick up a guitar in case someone needs a lesson or two. Not my strongest instrument, but a new Strat and combo in the man cave this summer might be just the ticket. I'm not thinking about it right now though, I'm just content being on Talkbass without having to read an intro or conclusion.

Yeah, I'm in the midst of marking final exams myself. Got called away from work, though, as my 3 year has leaky eyes. He should be okay. We bought a kite today and he loved it. Tomorrow I jam and next week I continue with exams. Good news is that I have a conference at the beginning of June and I'm done at the end of June. Got some publications to work on for the summer plus defreting a Chinese Hofner. Full steam ahead!

In a few hours I'll return to post with a photo of the stairs to the stage area at one of the busier of the local lemonade stands. They're very good new stairs, and very wide with lots of turnaround room at the corners. None of that changes the joy of a Hammond and a Leslie, and an 810 and and and both up and down. Down of course in one of the more interesting parts of the city at that hour ....
So yeah ain't no way a Phil Jones Suitcase Compact and C4 is going to blow out walls like an 810 but the times, they are a'changing

We certainly managed with 50 watts in the 70s, and also had way bigger speaker enclosures ....
