Good evening everyone. Late check-in but I'm hoping to catch some of M's acoustic fest featuring only musicians whose names begin with Z. Very intimate. Boy, do I have a story for you concerning my relationship dissolution with
Musicians Friend. Hey, don't snicker. We've been together for nearly twenty years. But what happened Thursday night was enough for me to say ta-ta.
It begins at the beginning. Remember back in February I was planning on buying the new baby Fender combo, LT25? MF supposedly had it coming in right after NAMM and I was one of the first to pre-order. Weeks went by and no amp, plus the backorder date was headed to spring. I canceled it knowing that everyone else had been selling the amp for weeks. Heck, even our local Salvation Store had it at $175 out the door! (JK)
So like the dummy I know I am, I decided to return to the scene of the crime, after selling my SX P/J bass and Markbass Micromark 801, to purchase a Squier Classic Vibe 70s Strat and BOSS Katana-50 combo. I was kinda excited about the rig because this was a 2019 Strat with humbuckers in the bridge. Yeah, it alters the Strat tone, but I can rock out better if need be. What do I see, the Strat is coming in on May 1st. I mean, can MF or GC possibly get Fender equipment without cutting their pinky off as a promise they'll pay Fender? Their stuff is always back ordered. Well, the amp and guitar stand came a couple of days later, no problem at all. I figure I can wait until the middle of next week for the guitar.
So on Thursday night, I do like I always after eating large amounts of cheese and went online to see what, if anything was new. There, on MF's Strat webpage was a back order date of...get ready...get set...June 7, 2019! I could not believe it. No email from them at all which I have gotten before to let me know it would be longer. No nothing. I immediately called and told the gentleman that I wasn't going through this again. He said and I repeat, "it's tough for lefties." No, buying a left-handed catcher's mitt when you're ten is tough. This was a cruel joke getting preparing for the second act in this rotten-to-the-core Broadway show.
I responded with, "The guitar I ordered was $349. I'll take the $399 Strat CV 50s model for the same price as the other. Otherwise, I'm canceling the order." I know that might sound harsh, but I didn't feel I had any other recourse. I felt it was fair compensation being this was the second time in a row I was getting tossed to the side like a lettuce-only salad. The price wasn't that far off anyway. Plus they had the guitar in stock and we could get it done right then and there. He went and checked and came back with, "Sorry, the best I can do is $371, plus he couldn't authorize the deal; I was going to have to wait until tomorrow before commencing with his offer. What do you think I did? Pony up to $371? Punt the ball away? Bid MF adieu?
The third one. I mentioned I'd been a loyal customer for nearly 20 years and could not believe someone was gonna let $20 stand in the way of our relationship. They did and I did too. I told him to pull the order and I'd think about what to do next. What I did was sulk for a couple of moments and surfed to Sweetwater where I found not one, but two lefty Strats ready to ship, I made the buy along with a pack of strap locks. They immediately began processing the order, did their 55-pt inspection, stuck it in a box with a bag of candy, and got it to me TODAY, not next Wednesday, like with MF! Less than two days from ordering it. Can you believe that? Hello, anyone still reading? I cleaned her up a bit, barely did any setting up, and played an Em to begin the journey all over again. Very nice indeed.
My partnership with MF is over; Sweetwater, whom I dealt with years ago came through for me and I'm throwing my business their way until they something to annoy me down the road. Also, I have decided not to purchase any products unless they in stock. No more "it's coming across on a slow boat from Asia." I urge you to do the same if you've ever had the same problem as me.
Otherwise, not much been going on other than May beginning next week. Hang on to yer hats, it's gonna be a wild one!
Carry on,
