I couldnt afford one either Mike so last year I sent away for a DIY kit form Hofner Style Build by an Aussie company - Pitbull..It will look like this when I finally finish it..Its been a project ive put off a few times so 2020..time to get it done loll I am interested to see what it sounds like..I have it partially assembled and the weight is very light...I actually bought it for Charly to learn bass on as a lightweight bass guitar compared to the Sterling by Music Man SUB bass I purchased for her a couple years ago..she finds it's too heavy...hence the lightweight Hofner Style Kit Build lol
They do have a midrange model called the HCT. It is made in China, but at a Hofner factory bay Hofner employees. It uses the same handmade craftsmanship of the Germans, but they add a centre block. I have one. There are some beautiful ones being sold by Berry Clark Music (I bought one of mine from him). They have the nice sunburnt and bound necks. He has both standard pup spacing and Cavern spacing versions. Real beauties. Folks on the various Facebook Hofner clubs have been salivating over them.
There was also a 70s German Hofner on Reverb about a month ago for roughly $900 USD. It had the blade pups too, which are nice single coil pups. I have them on my 68 and love them! It's a brighter tone than the staple and diamond pups.
That is a really cool project, Giff. Get that thing done with; you have over 364 days to do it! Then you could teach her a few tunes and let her into your world a little bit. Now if it was me, I'd be doing artsy-fartsy stuff all day long. I mean, don't get me wrong, #2 is great at it, but I'd be forced to consider wrist-slashing as my follow-up project...
That bass is cool, you've got to finish it.
Yeah, I'm familiar with the HCT. The woodblock under the bridge keeps it from those hollow body tones we love though. Someone told me it sounds very much like a solid body bass guitar. That's the problem. Watching Reverb though might be an option. Thanks, Doc.

Well, it's 2020 here in the Midwest of the good 'ole USA. To my friends in the west, hold your horses, it's coming!
Heading back to work on Friday minus children, and then they'll make their entrance on Monday. Think May, folks! In the meantime, let's all have a nice musical year sharing whatever makes us smile or find inspiration through.
Here's my Winter NAMM wishlist I talked about a couple of days ago:
1) a left-handed Fender Mustang bass so we southpaws can have a short-scale Fender too.
2) Yamaha really begins to assert itself with Ampeg and here comes the new version of the BA combos that are lightweight, modeling-capable, or with a tube preamp, heavy on the lightweight if you get my pun! Even the 108 is a chunk.
3) High-tech continues to make it even easier for DIY recording at home. I want something easy enough for me to record a tune and make it web-accessible in no time. Maybe it already exists and I need to get out there and look. Right now I'm trying out the free version of Soundtrap. It's pretty cool but is gonna take me some time to mess with.

My little trio is fun but we hardly get to play because our percussionist works the 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM shift and our singer and I can play longer after school at 3:30. Nah, it's s'posed to be beige[or whatever that color is].We had 2 good gigs today(12/31). A nursing home for the shut-ins and a VFW NYE dinner/dance. The Rumble 100 was quite sufficient for both. For me, even if I had roadies, it's combos, with occasional extension speakers, PRN.

Good for you, Gone Plaid, I was gonna ask how the gig went but it all sounded positive. That darn Rumble amp is that good, isn’t it? I’m out of my tiny VOX mood for the first day of the new year and hooked up the 800 to to give it a run, but that 100, for both practice and small-med gigs is about all you need. I love it especially with the hollow-body.
Good work today, GP, you probably made a lot of people tap their feet and feel good about themselves.

I guess it's the Ignition model that is affordable, $4-500, as opposed to the $2-3,000 ones.
My El-Cheapo kit form DIY Pitbull Hofner Style bass (Aussie company - Chinese supplied parts) was approx $150USD in 2018 when I bought it with all parts supplied loll As our Fearless Leader said..Giff get busy and finish making it for your wife loll
Its actually a basswood body with a spalted maple veneer top, which I actually like the look of unstained (see pic) but I dont have high expectations for the sound once I have completed the build...who knows though..I may be surprised lol Not affiliated btw with Pitbull Guitar builds...just gotta find time in 2020 to finish the build and see what It sounds like. My wife Charly will be happy when she finally gets to play it...shes waited nearly 3 years now for it. Note that the pointed head design is opposite to the real Hofner basses (except for the real Hofner left handed neck) and the transfers/logos that are supplied are called Pit Bull lolll
The kit is more like a left hand crafted neck on a right handed body shape loll..I suppose Doc I may have a few comments loll
