As a natural strawberry blonde, these days turning up the gain for unity as I play my roots is normal.
You’re killing me with that rumination! I’m trying to unload gear, not just change one for another! The gain knob on the Elf is interesting to me because it functions in three stages. Low gain is clean, mid-high gain adds compression (an LED shows how much as you play), and full gain is distortion.
At the time the amplifier stork brought the Elf, only the BA-108v2 and PJB C4 were with me. With The BG-400 and C4 reunited as a proper couple, an arranged marriage for the Elf and a PJB Cab 27 was the result. My utterly uneducated guess is the Elf's capability as a 1x10 combo is roughly the equivalent of the 2x7 cab. Not going to do the maths or study excursion. Another PJB Cab 27 + the Elf would make for a complete second rig and that is not without attraction.
The PJB BG-400 combo is surprisingly heavy for its size. That's only one of its surprises. People who hear for the first time what comes out of such a small combo experience something of a head gonk. The Elf combo would produce pretty much the same reaction. The bonus of the Elf combo is it's even more portable than my Elf rig ....
... ... crank the gain to show off the Elfin magic. I read when gain is full up all kinds of interesting tones can be had. ... ...
Could work either way.
