The Combo Club

Interestingly, in 6-7th grade, when pretending to be a band ( Monkees, etc) I usually pretended to be McCartney on lefty bass. When we got real guitars in 8th grade, only righties were around and I ‘reverted’...

Interesting, JPD. So are you a natural lefty or were you just mimicking Paul?

It’s funny, my son is 100% left-handed but when learning bass in the 4th grade orchestra he had no choice but to learn right. When he add e-bass, I ordered him a lefty and after two days he tells me he wants a right-handed bass. We never discussed orientation again.

I’m ambidergar.... ambergedi... amphiba...

I can use both hands.

What a lot of people don't realize, is that there are two types of ambidextrous people: both handed, and those like me - neither handed. You can't read my handwriting no matter which hand I use. I blame the kindergarten teacher who pinned a note to my shirt (yet another emotional scar) to inform my mom that starting with the chalk in my left hand, then switching hands halfway through my ABC's was not acceptable. They decided to "encourage" me to be right handed. This came in unexpectedly handy when it was discovered (while in the Navy) that I could write as fast backwards with my left hand as most people write forwards with their right hands. I was pressed into use when they ran short of the usual guys.

This is my very first combo. I used on this from '68 to 74.

Outfitter, hello. I just happened to be grabbing a midnight snack (shh...keep a lid on it) and came upon your attempted posts. The one I’m replying to came through but I’m having a devil of a time trying to figure out where the combo is!

I see a speaker and what looks like an amp chassis, but I’m lost after that. Let’s wait til morning when my crack staff of experts can help me understand what I’m looking at. As for the rest of your pics, they didn’t come through, ay Kraft in my phone, I’ll try my laptop tomorrow.

If you’re having trouble uploading pics, there are numerous sites you can use as a go-between in order to post them. What I go is use my Google Drive and post the link to “images” above. Always works. Make sure they’re JPEGs.

We’d love to have you join us, I just need to see a combo amp. Hang in there!

Hello? Hellooooooo? Gee, maybe they're all secretly getting a surprise birthday party together for me in the Great Hall of Bass and they don't want me to go in there. Why ruin the surprise, so I won't. I popped in to show you my new pedalboard and the pedals I currently own to stick on it. Or should I say, lack-of stick?

To remind ya'll, I'm new at this dedicated pedal game, thinking all those little metal boxes were for those not wise enough to buy a combo-like all-in-one multi-effects unit. Well, after running through probably my 7th or 8th multi-FX pedal, I decided to give specific pedals a chance with my Terror Bass/PJB/Ampeg trio.

So I ordered a Voodoo Labs Dingbat and installed the pedals this morning. It's what any respectable birthday boy (or girl) would do on a Saturday birthday. Here are some pics of the final result. Notice the OCD-like neatness of the wiring, above and below. Everything works great, though the power supply and I will be having a word or two after school because it wants to fall off as soon as I move it with any more force than "gently." Otherwise, not a hiccup and it is so nice to have everything all linked up with one AC cord coming out the side. I can't believe I waited until 60 to find out about such niceties. Tomorrow, I'm gonna take a spin in one of those new-fangled automobiles and see what I think of that...

BTW, I'll have the results to you concerning the motto vote tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest. It's been quite hectic counting up the half-dozen votes, but I'm expecting a big flood of members dropping by to give me their choice. Operators are standing by.

And my JAN 12AT7 rolled in today, pardon the pun. I'm all set to retube the TB and, add the pedals to it, and let the fur fly. Kansas, this is your warning to prepare for seismic rumblings in the days ahead. See ya!

PS: the t-shirt reads, "My 60th Birthday...the one where I was Quarantined 2020" #2 will be forced to wear it in December as well.

Regarding your pedal board, I noticed you are using rigid connectors between each pedal. This seems like it may cause some problems down the road. But to make sure, I checked in with this guy:

Yep, he seems to think so too.
Be careful.

Thank you, Rod, I had no idea. I tend to stay away from anything spawned by Satan anyway, so thanks for the heads up.

Seriously, this proves how many times I’ve hooked up more than one pedal. I have only one flexi cable on me and these were sitting in a box. Heck, I thought they made good sense.

Time to get online and order a few of these patch cables. Thanks again, RR.

G’Dog, what’s Rod won for saving Fearless Leaded’s pedal board???
