The only band I ever truly enjoyed, without a bassist, was Traffic. However, Dear Mr. Fantasy sure sounds a lot better with a strong driving bass!

Our school started two weeks ago. Was going to send the 1st grader (6YO) back to class, but….decided to pull back (literally) at last minute and home school both again this year. Ooohhh…

Man, that was some good stuff. i had no idea The Bryds played that song. And if that ws in '70, then who wrote it? The Doobs covered in probably '72 or '73? I did miss the slow bluesy part in the DBs song though.
Great questions, Tele. you have a pallet full of options here but for me, I'd push down the Ulta Lo and leave it until my ears got used to the sound. If it's way too dark for ya, go ahead and click on the Ultra Hi to see what that'll do. I know some players use both, but I never have. The UL scoops out some of the mids and if you don't want that then just add bass from your tone control. That'll do nicely. Same thing if you're finding it still too dark and are needing a boost in the highs. Aren't options wonderful?

I know Steve Winwood played bass during their recordings because he helped me figure out "Freedom Rider!"
I have two indicators of loud volume, percieved or not:
1. My wife, whose percieved volume is always high and,
2. My hearing aids complain when actual volume is high.
Wives, SR, can be excellent perceivers of volume, whether it's from bass guitar, TV, or snoring!
How could you miss that beautiful vintage Ampeg diamond vinyl that the picks and, uh, ... other stuff, is sitting on?Photos don't do it justice. It shimmers with just the slightest move of your viewing angle (at least in the store lighting).

Actually, it might be like that everywhere, but we may not know until adventurers like yourself venture out into the wild to find out. Please keep us up on your exploits. I'm putting 500 down it'll be the blues group with the fretless because after a while the guitar player's volume will annoy you...

Oh it is, but I’ve pushed the common demand we make of newbies here at TB and have made it, “If I can’t touch it, it doesn’t exist.” So I grabbed the triple-lenses magnifying glass from my Science-boy kit and species out the Rocket Bass’ skin. Bee-U-tee-full!

As a long time Rumbler, that was my attitude until some months ago in a GC I spied a new little Rocket Bass. And I touched its odd looking skin. "Hmmmpf!", I sniffed. 
With my mighty sinews of taught spring steel, I convinced myself it weighed more than the equivalent Rumble sitting next to it. As I watched it rise with my second slightest exertion, I saw the store lights dance magically across each and every one of the myriad individual diamond shapes etched into its shiny black vinyl cover. 
And I was mesmerized... oooohmmmm ... oooooohmmmmmm. ... ...

It says it was a gospel song written in 1966. The Byrds recorded it in 1969. The Doobies then did their version in 1972. The Byrds' version is nice but I like the Doobie's version a little better.

PT! Thank you, kind sir. How the heck have ya been? It's been like forever since you were here, and now you've answered questions I'm sure a few of us were wondering about. I'm listening to the gospel version as I write this and it's fine work, but like you, I like the rockier versions, especially the Doobies, better. I think it's that slow blues breakdown that made it my fave rendition. Thanks so much for helping out!

LJB, if I had watched Stevie in the studio you'd have heard about it by now! I just remember seeing pics of him playing a Fender bass and figured it was him when they needed it. Keyboard bass is more likely, I suppose, when they played the songs live. Listen to the studio version of Freedom rider some time and tell me what you hear.
