Congrats, Datsgor, that’s really neat to hear. I could see that combo being the perfect rig partner to your bass. My only question is what if you were asked to take the PA to the next gig?![]()
Wow, I think I paid as much for one of those as you did for two.I was able to get two JMB player’s school combos for $275 each from Guitar Center
Me again. Can I also interest you in a membership number after blasting some vintage Fender amplification on our pages? I think it's time to make it official, Datsgor, what do you think? Let me know!![]()

Of course dear @iagtrplyr ! I am pleased to be part of this group.

So I finally found *the* opposite of my Ampeg 18” extension for one of my Markbass combos, and it ended up being a SWR 210t. I was always a tweeter hater, but for this purpose of running all my Hifi effects through this and only using an alembic fx1 with the Ampeg 18 ext now.
Radial Twin Cities pedal for life.
Edit: for those wondering around Christmas of last year I was able to get two JMB player’s school combos for $275 each from Guitar Center because they ran a stupid sale on the new ones and get inundated by Covid trade ins. That’s how I started playing with bi-amping and stereo bs
Sure man. Sounds good.Me again. Can I also interest you in a membership number after blasting some vintage Fender amplification on our pages? I think it's time to make it official, Datsgor, what do you think? Let me know!![]()
LOLIn America, I use those exact same words, swink, when I'm conversing with my five-month-old granddaughter. It can be quite a compelling discussion, I must say.
Maybe it wasn't the tube after all. Maybe something caused the tube to blow. Hmm...Sure man. Sounds good.
Two bits: I plug my bass into my combo. Turn on combo. Play. Joy.Just read the two pages of comments here thanks for pointing me in that direction @Morrighan
Take what I think with a grain of salt. I don’t play out in bands as a bass player and that may never come to be we’ll see. My bass playing has been strictly confined to playing one since 1975 occasionally as a hobby and in my home studios since 1985 when recording tracks. I played drums in bands all those years. I’ve owned a bass since 1975 and played them the whole time but it wasn’t my focus or the instrument I played in bands.
This past 3 years I’ve focused solely on playing bass and that’s where I will die. Should have been here my whole life and I’m kicking myself for not making this decision long ago. I love it here on bass. It’s where I belonged all along.
I have been fortunate to be in a position to buy a lot of bass gear through the years. In the past 3 years I have tried 6 or 7 combos at home and kept 4 for long periods of time purchasing my 5th about ten days ago. Prior to that I owned at least 4-5 other bass amp either combos or amp/enclosure setups. I’m not a pro. I’m not even that good. So all that said my thoughts on the HPF I just bought and returned?
It’s not for me. I read through the new forum @Morrighan you just pointed to and have read other forums on the topic and considered all of your opinions here. Your opinions here are why I pulled the trigger and got one. I just got back from the post office and it’s on its way back not. It will cost me $35 total shipping both ways just to check it out.
It clearly changed the character of my combo. I like what I’m hearing out of my combo. I will be doing a full review on that in the next several days. I want to have it for a few weeks before I do. The HPF is not needed nor desirable in my situation. I just hated having to plug in 2 patch cables and a power supply. I like the simplicity of plugging in the amp and plugging in the bass and away I go.
I however must be wrong. There are so many other bassist out there including many of you and some who are pros who swear by the HPF. The theory makes total sense. In a big room with challenging acoustics perhaps it could be helpful. I don’t know. All I know is what my ears are telling me. And from my point of view in my narrow situation the HPF not only didn’t improve my combo it took away from it some of the qualities I like about it. I did not hear a power boost. It shrank the frequency spectrum robbing the round full bottom end I was hearing.
But many of you guys have been playing since the 60s! On bass for 20,30,40,50 years! So maybe I’m just missing something and it’s just my old ears. But it’s not for me. Again. Who am I.
Two bits: I plug my bass into my combo. Turn on combo. Play. Joy.

Such a cool camper!

Yeah, I know, I'm hogging all the bandwidth right now, but a terrible thing happened in my music room/lab last night and today, and I'm depressed. The Orange Terror Bass bit the dust. Yes, it's true, and I'm trying to figure out what happened. The last time I played it, back in early July, I think, things were fine. Yeah, it still made that awful bang upon startup and shutdown, but I'd just gotten used to it.
Last night I finished up hooking up the new Vox pedal, which sounds way better than I remembered from a few years ago, flipped on the Terror Bass, lights came on, turned up the gain, turned up the volume, hit a note from my P-bass, and...nothing. What's going on here? I expected sound and was rewarded with silence. It's never done this before, so I went through the usual checks before realizing it wasn't on my end of the business. I took it out, hooked up my Markbass Marcus Miller combo to check the Rumble cab, and all was well. I went to bed thinking I'd look further into it this morning.
After splashing on a little Aqua Velva for good luck, I proceeded to open up the amp head and what do you think I found? A milky-white 12AX7 preamp tube in V1. It was my brand new Tung-Sol too. Sadness abounded, but I put it down as a bad tube that cracked upon shut down the last time I played. At least that's what I read can happen. Uh-huh.
I replaced the tube with the amp's original Ruby, known to be a rather hardy valve itself. I was feeling that splashing on the old man cologne was a stroke of genius, and I'd be on my merry way. Pulled the MB off the Rumbler and re-hooked the Orange back up. Clicked the toggle to 'standby,' waited for a half-minute or so, clicked to 'on,' and with the mighty Precision around my shoulder, hit a big ole open E and...nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero. No sound.Maybe it wasn't the tube after all. Maybe something caused the tube to blow. Hmm...
Off to the Orange website where I found the means to contact them, explain the problem, and wait for a response. I received one shortly thereafter and they're looking into it. She's gonna be jumping on that big brown truck, I'm sure, off to parts unknown (probably Chicago). Hopefully, it won't take too long. Normally, a one-year warranty is the standard-issue unless you register within a set period of time; then it's two years. We've been together now for 16 months, and it's never been severely cranked or even out of the house! I pray it's a one-and-done before I sell it to Morrighan for half of its retail price...
The moral to this story is ya never know what can happen so don't get too upset over it, and is, to my ears, that solid-state is so damn good-sounding, what's the point of adding tubes to the preamp? I like the tone of the Terror Bass, no argument there, but I still like my Rocket Bass combo better! Yes, my ears are tuned to Ampeg maybe, but there's nary a tube in sight and it's not going in for repairs this week!
Off my rare soapbox of complaining about defective equipment. Have a nice afternoon,

So.. I was on the list twice already? Weird.Keep reading, D. It's illegal for me to add you to the membership THREE times in one lifetime. Sorry. You're number 35 and should be proud that you've been around longer than me!
Here's the current membership roster for those who wish to see themselves in lights. Feel free to check for errors, all you bean counters out there. Proud of this list regardless of how many times Datsgor was on it!

Considering that I can buy another R100 for ~ what it costs to retube a lotta amps, I'll be sticking with solid state (which I can also lift without running for the AdvilTM.Well, wouldn't ya know it...just at the time I was considering tapping into my 401K for some tubey goodness, I hear this!
Vintage tube amps, current (mortgage requiring) offerings and tube preamps are now out the window.
Well, at least I know Aqua Velva doesn't work so there is always Old Spice or English Leather.
