The Combo Club

Keep reading, D. It's illegal for me to add you to the membership THREE times in one lifetime. Sorry. You're number 35 and should be proud that you've been around longer than me!

Here's the current membership roster for those who wish to see themselves in lights. Feel free to check for errors, all you bean counters out there. Proud of this list regardless of how many times Datsgor was on it!

The race for 300 is up. Let's get those new cadets in.

Yeah, I know, I'm hogging all the bandwidth right now, but a terrible thing happened in my music room/lab last night and today, and I'm depressed. The Orange Terror Bass bit the dust. Yes, it's true, and I'm trying to figure out what happened. The last time I played it, back in early July, I think, things were fine. Yeah, it still made that awful bang upon startup and shutdown, but I'd just gotten used to it.

Last night I finished up hooking up the new Vox pedal, which sounds way better than I remembered from a few years ago, flipped on the Terror Bass, lights came on, turned up the gain, turned up the volume, hit a note from my P-bass, and...nothing. What's going on here? I expected sound and was rewarded with silence. It's never done this before, so I went through the usual checks before realizing it wasn't on my end of the business. I took it out, hooked up my Markbass Marcus Miller combo to check the Rumble cab, and all was well. I went to bed thinking I'd look further into it this morning.

After splashing on a little Aqua Velva for good luck, I proceeded to open up the amp head and what do you think I found? A milky-white 12AX7 preamp tube in V1. It was my brand new Tung-Sol too. Sadness abounded, but I put it down as a bad tube that cracked upon shut down the last time I played. At least that's what I read can happen. Uh-huh.

I replaced the tube with the amp's original Ruby, known to be a rather hardy valve itself. I was feeling that splashing on the old man cologne was a stroke of genius, and I'd be on my merry way. Pulled the MB off the Rumbler and re-hooked the Orange back up. Clicked the toggle to 'standby,' waited for a half-minute or so, clicked to 'on,' and with the mighty Precision around my shoulder, hit a big ole open E and...nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero. No sound. :banghead: Maybe it wasn't the tube after all. Maybe something caused the tube to blow. Hmm...

Off to the Orange website where I found the means to contact them, explain the problem, and wait for a response. I received one shortly thereafter and they're looking into it. She's gonna be jumping on that big brown truck, I'm sure, off to parts unknown (probably Chicago). Hopefully, it won't take too long. Normally, a one-year warranty is the standard-issue unless you register within a set period of time; then it's two years. We've been together now for 16 months, and it's never been severely cranked or even out of the house! I pray it's a one-and-done before I sell it to Morrighan for half of its retail price...

The moral to this story is ya never know what can happen so don't get too upset over it, and is, to my ears, that solid-state is so damn good-sounding, what's the point of adding tubes to the preamp? I like the tone of the Terror Bass, no argument there, but I still like my Rocket Bass combo better! Yes, my ears are tuned to Ampeg maybe, but there's nary a tube in sight and it's not going in for repairs this week!

Off my rare soapbox of complaining about defective equipment. Have a nice afternoon,

FL

That sucks! Good thing you have a few back ups!

Actually, old Spice is my fave, but only with solid state.

I was just looking at some TalkBass threads on Terro Basses and found one where the guy says there are two small fuses on the bottom that could be looked at. That's the one panel I didn't remove. either way, if something popped the fuse I'll still want it looked at. I am curious though. Unfortunately, my track record on curiosity isn't as good as I'd like it to be. Maybe I'll wait for Orange.

SR, play it safe and pick up a tube pedal for your combo. Easier to deal with in the long run. Or instead, just enjoy your Studio 40 and giggle every time you read about a tube mishap. :crying:

I've read up on some tube amp fixes as well but, I stopped reading when hearing of some electrocucians ;). Pouring white liquid on speakers is one thing (sorry, the picture is permanently embedded) but I draw the line at self-administered tazers :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:!

I will take you advice and continue to giggle...

The race for 300 is up. Let's get those new cadets in.

Plus, by my account, there are only 50 pages of posts to go before the big one-thousand! That's a thousand individual posts, right? Hell, I'll snag 800 of those myself. Come on, folks, let's continue on this magical journey where you never know what's around the next corner.

At 300 new members, 1,000 pages, or June 2022, whichever comes first, we're going to have an election to nominate and vote for a new Fearless Leader. During a conversation with my Sergeant-at-Arms, it was decided to have a full-fledged election complete with balloons, slogans, and under-the-table bribes. Hey, I may need to pay for those amp repairs.

Like in my fifth-grade class, we'll nominate those we'd like to see get the job (or if we truly hate them), the person will have to accept the nomination, and after we get a sufficient number to run (or one), we'll hold the election. I'll be calling on my friends at Dominion to transport a voting booth to the club to make it all nice and legal. After the count takes place by the private accounting firm I've been using for years, Accountaholics, Inc, I will reveal the winner, and at that moment they may take over the task of keeping this juggernaut afloat. Let's shoot for Tuesday, June 15, 2022, as our official Election Day. Vote early and often, there may even be cake.:hyper:

I'll keep ya updated after we head into the new year,

FL

First thing I thought was is it a fuse! I should have mentioned that but not knowing Orange and you communicating with them figured I’d stay out of it. But it sounds like a fuse issue to me.

So the Combo Club was founded on March 22nd 2015!

I worked on a lot of vacuum tube cryptographic equipment in the US Navy. I do believe the milky substance you observated inside the preamp tube is vaporized filament, caused by the final catastrophic failure of the capacitor that has caused the the on/off banging for however long it has done it. Like the heater +5VDC went to maybe 50V or something even more impressive. If there are other tubes in the amp, I'd be inspecting them carefully. Maybe pull them out and take them down to 7-11 and plug them in the tube tester in the corner. Surely it still works.
