The Combo Club

As a bass player I prefer Stingray wing with capers.

I was gonna say, they do that with cows too but it requires some specialized equipment. There's nothing icky about seafood to me, I just don't prefer it.

That said, One of the best meals I ever had was in a seafood restaurant called Captain Nemo's in Naples FL. The biggest sleeper restaurant ever. The name gives it a sort of Long John Silver's vibe to we were skeptical, then we pulled up to a strip mall. But you get inside and it is clear from the beginning it is an excellent restaurant. If I could get shrimp like that on the regular I could see the attraction. Those were almost lobster size, grilled whole and had a sort of sweetness to them.

I don't recall ever having a disappointing shrimp dinner.

I've had several very disappointing lobster dinners. Maybe because my first was in a very nice restaurant on the wharf in Boston in the '70s. It was as good as the best shrimp I've ever had! But every try at lobster ever since, from Bar Harbor to Alaska and in between, has failed to measure up. What's up wit dat?

Lobster just tastes like butter. That's why. But the main issue is cooking. Shrimp and scallops require very little cook time and cooking them beyond the minimum makes them rubbery. I assume lobster falls into a similar category but having never cooked it myself I don't know.

There is also a big difference between fresh and frozen. Peel and eat fresh shrimp in New Orleans was my favorite...

Interesting - never been to a sleeper resto; so what happens there? :snaphappy:
Sleeper:American slang term for something that isn't what it appears to be. Used to be used to describe a 'beater' type car with hotrod capability(wolf in sheep's clothing). In the restaurant's case, it didn't look like a great place to eat. Hidden gem is another way of describing it.

Yes, my Boston lobster was buttery, but actually tasted just like shrimp! Yes, most bad ones were very rubbery, obviously overcooked. Occasionally Mrs. Dog finds lobster tails at the grocery and she can make them taste quite nice. But still not as good as that Boston lobster. But, mmmMmmMmm ... Mrs. Dog makes The Best Shrimp, boiled, grilled, fried, sauteed, jambalaya, whatever. Hmmm ... wonder what's for lunch?

Fried SPAM.

Fried SPAM.

I tried fried SPAM at a highly recommended local diner on Oahu. I dunno if it's supposed to be that salty, or if they gave me The Haole Special to watch my face pucker! :spit:

An Aussie friend and I found an Aussie bar in Berlin(!), of all places, and they treated me to a Vegemite sandwich. It brought back memories of that Hawaiian SPAM! They allowed it wasn’t the best Vegemite they had ever had, but said it was very good. Sadly, I could not agree. :rollno:

I may have an aversion to salt. Mrs. Dog likes to pour it onto the chips at Mexican restaurants, so I try to grab a bunch before that. Woe unto me when I'm too slow. But she agreed with my assessment of the SPAM and Vegemite.

G-Dog for me spam wasn’t a delicacy. It wasn’t a choice. We were poor. Poor people ate spam. Spam and a box of Mac and cheese and some peas. I wrote a song about that dinner lol. Or freezer Queen frozen Salisbury steak. Lol. That’s the closest I got to steak growing up. Government cheese. Mmmm. Loved that giant block of government cheese. Now spam is expensive! When did that happen?! When did it start getting served in restaurants?! I’ve done ok and eat an actual steak occasionally now. Lol. Spam? Never again!

Spam has its place. It kept many of us alive in the "good" old days ;).

Even in current times, I have a can of Spam on hand when camping with the "kids". They are actually adults with their own kids now but, when bacon runs out, Spam comes to the rescue ;).

Like the Smoke House in Forks Washington. Used to be the best smoked salmon place ever, but you wouldn't know to look at it.

Lol that’s hilarious @SoulReflection ! I don’t remember ever opening a can of Spam. I’m repressing that memory deep! I do remember the key! By the time I was on my own until I got married if it didn’t come out of a box and I couldn’t make it in my skillet I didn’t eat it! ;)

In Buffalo NY we have a thing called a Beef on Weck sandwich. Its finely sliced roast beef on a roll that has caraway seeds and sea salt on top. Most people agree it started a long time ago at this little hole in the wall. Great beef on wecks there! One of best I ever had. Ulrichs downtown used to have a great one too as does Charleys. But it began at this little dive! Cool old school atmosphere. You would never suspect you would get good food from here. Some great food comes out of corner bars sometimes!
