The Combo Club

... ... the company is well known for its bass amps and I think that's half the battle. The other half is getting enough here in the club to agree it's okay ... ... What say you, membership? ..., can we allow any combo that someone may use for bass to pass in our club ... or does it have to be a combo specifically made for the bass guitar? I know, tough choice, .... Yes or no, ... G'Dog may pop a vein if you vote yes. Let's find out, shall we? ;)

As always, you make several good points, Fearless Leader. Has the combo in question, in fact (retrofitting aside), been used as a bass amp? And is this to become yet another qualifying question for applicants?

And Michael also makes a fair point about the Combo Club founding post not specifying bass combos. But is this thread not in the "Amps and Cabs [BG]" forum of the TalkBass website? So, why is bass combo amp such a stretch of a foregone assumption?

But perhaps there is another founding principal that may have eluded us all ...

I am chartering a new club to any and all. This is for the TBer who is not afraid to admit they rock a combo as their Main rig. ... ... .

Having one or more combos is great! But, when you go onstage is your main rig a combo? For many of us, the answer is a resounding Yes! For others ... ...?

Has the combo in question been his main rig? For either bass or guitar?
.

Saturday means it's chili dog night at the Combo Club all-nite laundromat and silent movie theater
(as you knew)

What I did not know concerns my PJB BG-400 combo amp. It went in virtual live use today.
Combo DI -> DAW -> Zoom, with a barely-used (until now) SM-58 mic on the second DAW input. And a metronome app on the Smrtphn, all monitored with headphones from the DAW.

<This will not be on the test>

Turn the combo's master down to goose egg, and there is the silent recording win I was looking for.

The Discovery
the combo's AUX IN doesn't work with the speakers off

The Kludge
a metronome app on the computer works just fine for this arrangement.

I'd go for a bass conversion. Seems like a neat project ... hmmmm

Doctor...you have enough experimental projects out there, but I must admit, I could see you having fun with taking a guitar combo and turning it into a bass amp. I forgot too, another model on my Stage 800 is a Fender Showman, which I believe was used for bass recording even though it was a guitar amp. I guess that means the Studio and Stage combos really can go both ways!

Here are the actual words of the founder of the Combo Club. Comment #1 by “ChefKen.”

He states, “this is for the TBer who is not afraid to admit they rock a combo as their main rig.”

And he goes on to say, “The ONLY requirement for this club is pride in combo ownership.”

Seems pretty cut and dry to me. No mention of it having to be a specific bass combo. Just a pride in combo ownership who’s not afraid to admit a combo is their main rig.
I rest my case.

I vote yes.

Thanks for your vote, Michael! Way to use the original FL as evidence! :)

Oh God no! No no no no no no! Johnny, are you a hired gun from another world sent here to disrupt the Combo Club? We've been through the Battle of the B-15, and it was a bloody affair. I eventually had to capitulate and agree that the B15 is not a combo because it not being in a single chassis. Slap some Eminence bass speakers in that 'Peg of yours and, if it's a yes win, I'll get you your number on Monday. Great pic of your "other" combo!

Congrats...I think. :wideyed:

Good question! And this is the fourth time the word question has shown up in this post. Johnny, have you gigged with this combo, and if the answer is yes, was it with bass or primarily guitar? I think it's fair to ask, but since I don't know the gentleman personally, I'm taking his word for it.

So, Doggie, are you a yea or nay at this point?

The Stage 800 is going up on the sale block in case anyone is interested. Not a durned thing wrong with it, but it's thin-the-herd time and it drew the short stick. Papa needs a new pair of shoes, so if you're anywhere near the sound of my voice you may want to check the ads in just a bit for a price that'll make even GP wanna clean out the garage to make more room in time for a visit from Santa! Good hunting!

... What say you, membership? ... can we allow any combo that someone may use for bass to pass in our club (I mean, the guy actually came to us with a cool pic), or does it have to be a combo specifically made for the bass guitar? I know, tough choice, but this is why we have a Constitution...sort of. Yes or no, and if you add a comment then we'll love and respect you even more....

I think if an amp legit works for bass, it's good. I mean, if I build my own amp and it works for bass, it's a bass amp. If it works for guitar, it's a guitar amp. If it works for both, it's a whatever-I'm-playing-at-the-moment amp.

So I vote yes. If G'Dog blows a gasket, well, we'll rustle up a doctor.

Also, Bill Wyman's ghost has offered to turn state's evidence, noting that he got the gig with the Stones because his Vox AC-30 had enough inputs for everyone to play. He played a Mustang bass through it. This was not unusual at the time.

While my Rumble is my only rig and will get used whenever possible, on stage at church I go DI->PA. Does this disqualify me?

Miles, don't look now, but you're slowly becoming one of my favorite posters! We've got Doc Intrepid on standby, but the fact we have to fly him in from Canada does make it a chore. Oh well, vote noted and appreciated! Oh yeah, very nice with that Wyman evidence. I agree, many bass players back then used quality guitar amps, and vice-versa.

Knew this one was coming, but I got a little extra sleep last night so I'm better prepared for the flamethrowing. This one is dicey, I'll admit, but the company is well known for its bass amps and I think that's half the battle. The other half is getting enough here in the club to agree it's okay for someone who could easily say he or she has installed bass speakers (be creative, Johnny) and has played it with four thick strings.

Otherwise, does the Bassman Club cancel out everyone who joined who has the 4X10 original and uses it for guitar? Remember, 007, I also have a Rumble modeler and sometimes enjoy that lightweight, but totally tuneful '59 Bassman.

now, maybe I'm blowing smoke because I'm already entering the lame-duck period of my rein, but the guy has what could be a legitimate combo for bass. What say you, membership? It's been a while since a major issue was debated, can we allow any combo that someone may use for bass to pass in our club (I mean, the guy actually came to us with a cool pic), or does it have to be a combo specifically made for the bass guitar? I know, tough choice, but this is why we have a Constitution...sort of. Yes or no, and if you add a comment then we'll love and respect you even more.

This vote will be open until 11:59 PM, Sunday night. After that, I'll reveal the winning decision. Remember, only one vote per person unless you're Morrigan. Then you get two. Thems the rules!

FL

note: I bought a Fender Greta amp for my Tele a number of years ago and occasionally used it with my Rumble 115 cab. I thought it sounded great, albeit kinda thin. Still, I was admitted to the Low-wattage Amp Club and at the time, had the smallest amp in the group. Still counted though. I know you're gonna say it's different hooking up an amp to a cab and displaying a combo that could be used with bass speakers. Again, how do we know they're not currently in there? I don't. 007 doesn't. Only Johnny knows fer sure.

Okay, your call. I'm fine either way, but G'Dog may pop a vein if you vote yes. Let's find out, shall we? ;)
YES.
It's Combo Club not Bass Combo Club.
