Why not try one out with the stock preamp and see if you like it? It's not *bad* by any means, just you could improve on it at a later date if you wanted to. It's one of the easier mods to try.

There are a lot of things I don't like about Conklins, although I think they have good build quality and tone. I'm also not a big fan of Bill Conklin, either professionally or personally, but I don't want to go into that here.
Having said that, I'm probably going to buy a GT 7 or GTBD 7. There's just no other choice if you want a 7-string production bass.

Actually, Guitar Center and Musicians Friend are two different companies owned by the same parent company. They sell some brands the other doesnt. I recommend checking with your local stores for whats in stock.

Bartolini, Aguilar, Demeter.. There are several manufacturers out there.. My favorite is Demeter.
I have an OBP-3 in my GT-7 fretless that sounds fantastic.
Can remember what I paid exactly ( think it was around $150.00).
Not much.. around $12 to $15..

hmmm... the neck doesn't sound like it is too much bigger than my Alvarez 6. The bridge is about 1" wider (total). Sounds crazy enough to take a look at. All I gotta do is find someone around here who has one.

The edge of the bridge just about does, but not quite. The lower rear corner of the bridge is still on the bass, but it's tip is basically tangent to the edge of the bass.
Another preamp possibility might be the John East Circuits. They are getting good press, and the circuit boards themselves are fairly neat, size wise.
