the conklin GT-7 thread!!!

what is the string spacing at the nut and the bridge for the GT7?

From Bill Conklin himself:

"The GT-7 has a string spacing at the nut of approximately 9mm and at the bridge of about 16-16.5mm. The GTBD-7 has a string spacing of about 7mm at the nut and the same spacing at the heel as the GT-7."

While I really like my GT7's, I'da preferred the narrower spacing at the nut of the Dickens, and the preamp with a mid level and center selector. If you have the option, I say get the Dickens!

I'll leave comparison of the GT7 to these other basses to somebody else - I haven't had a lot of experience with those other basses.

What I *can* say though is that the quality of the bass is VERY good. There's nothing about the bass that I'd describe as "cheap" or "second rate" / "obviously mass produced". The components are good quality, the pickups produce a very big, modern sound. The preamp is a little un-subtle, but that's about the worst I can say. The neck is great, I have a low action with no dead-spots and no buzzes. Seriously, it's a good buy for the cash.

sorry to bring up old threads AGAIN, but...

i will have enough money for one in about two weeks, and i'm pretty much gonna have to take a leap of faith here.

*need reassurance*

so i mean...really...is it worth the money?

what are some tones from some bands or basses you could could compare the tone to?

for those who bought it new, did it come with a case?

IMO... Yes.

Unfortunately, no. However, I have a Ritter gig bag that I use with my fretless.. Unless you're planning a world tour, a good quality gig bag should do the job.

:(. that's quite pricey for a soft-shell case.

would i have a hard time trying to find a hard case that will fit it?

Probably due to the extended offset body design, wide neck and extra long headstock..

Don't be fooled by appearances.. The cases are VERY durable. I trust them enough to keep my $3000 plus customs in.

Make sure it's a *bass* case you buy at GC... the "CGC67" appears to be a *guitar* case.

If you can get a soft-shell bass case, be aware that it is indeed rigid, not flexible at all. It is rigid foam with corrugated cardboard on the flat outside surfaces. If you're really concerned, you can actually take the fabric cover off and replace the cardboard with wood or sheet plastic or something else a little tougher. But I haven't had any worries with mine just putting it in the car and lugging it into rehearsals and gigs. I would NOT check it thru an airport, but that's not its purpose anyway.

And second to the quality... you might actually consider getting one off e-bay -- there's almost always one or two up there at any given time, and they seem to go between $600 and $700. Frequently with cases included.

Have fun!

Hi cods! I have a Conklin Gt'7 red and I was truly amazed by the sound of it. the preamp is not bad actually its good but for the quality of the bass itself I would recommend changing it for an aguilar obp 3 or obp 1 they are both good and would make the instrument flawless IMO. I{m also seriously thinking n buying a fretless gt7. I just Love conklin! the basses are so nice man Its a killer price for the amizing bass and the tone is great! what I mainly play is 2 handed tapping, fast soloing and arpegios and the bass sounds awesome!! I dont know if its me but I get a similar sound as a tobias bass the old expensive ones. its a very clean sound and I dont get fretbuzz at alll when I play.

While I can't compare to other specific bass models, I would characterize the tone as fairly modern/high-tech -- crisp and clean, with really bright highs with the tone knobs set flat, escpecially with roundwounds. You have to boost the bass EQ and move to the neck pickup to get real thump, but it's definitely there. Saying the tone knobs detent is at 12:00, min at 7:00 and max at 5:00, I usually run mine with the bass boosted to around 2:00, and the treble cut to maybe 10:00. This gives a nice smooth pulse on the neck pickup, and a bright aggressive attack on the bridge pickup.

If you're gonna play pickstyle on the bridge pickup, ya gotta boost the bass even more or else cut the treble. But fingerstyle, the complexity and richness of the Barts comes out.

The point is that since this is a active system, there are LOTS of tones in this bass. Real vintage it ain't, but there are a TON of very useful sounds in this bass.

If you're getting one at a GC, can't you go play it? I would recommend bringing YOUR rig out there to see how it sounds through YOUR stuff, especially A/B'd with YOUR current bass.
