the conklin GT-7 thread!!!

If you've ever played any guitar, beadgbe means you get to use all of your old guitar fingerings on the high strings. Chords will be instantly available (though not all will "work", especially those with the 3rd voiced low). And if you play in a band where the guitarist wants to do unison riffs up high, you can copy his fingerings directly. Our own John Turner uses this tuning.

beadgcf means that all "bass" scale and riff patterns translate to anywhere on the neck, without having to worry about that 3rd that the guitar tuning does. I prefer this tuning even though I'm a recovering guitarist -- I guess I'm a traditionalist, and wanted the bass to be a *bass*, quite different and distsinct from a guitar. This tuning points up the fingering advantage of extended-range basses: no matter where you start a lick, you can finish it without running out of strings!

btw, how much is GC hitting you for this thing? Bill Conklin himself had a few left that he was selling for $999 a while ago... you might want to try him at [email protected] .

Which is your GC? Mine in Chicago actually *gave* me a case. I originally bought a floor model with a big ding in the face for $800 incl case AND tax. But when i got it home I discovered (a) the fret ends on the treble side were really rough, and (b) the case had mildewed and stunk like old towels, no matter how much Lysol I sprayed in. So I took it back to ask for a new case and a fret end filing -- and darned if the manager didn't offer me a brand-new bass there on the spot (with clean fret ends AND a nicer flame top), and even ordered me a brand-new case which I picked up a couple of weeks later. Of course, that was the time when they were blowing them out (Spring '01) because they had way too many... special ordering now, I suppose, could be a whole different deal.

Good luck with 'em...

I thought I had gotten rid of the desire for a Conkilin GT-7...

I just finished the tab for a 2-hand tap piece that goes from low C (Low B string fret 1) to a high G (High C string fret 19). Not that involved, just alot of cool sounding chord progressions. A 7th string would make this piece a tad bit easier. Not sure if I would use it for any other style though...

While I can't compare to other specific bass models, I would characterize the tone as fairly modern/high-tech -- crisp and clean, with really bright highs with the tone knobs set flat, escpecially with roundwounds. You have to boost the bass EQ and move to the neck pickup to get real thump, but it's definitely there. Saying the tone knobs detent is at 12:00, min at 7:00 and max at 5:00, I usually run mine with the bass boosted to around 2:00, and the treble cut to maybe 10:00. This gives a nice smooth pulse on the neck pickup, and a bright aggressive attack on the bridge pickup.

If you're gonna play pickstyle on the bridge pickup, ya gotta boost the bass even more or else cut the treble. But fingerstyle, the complexity and richness of the Barts comes out.

it doesn't sound "cheap" or "hollow" does it?

not in my experience! I recorded mine with the standard preamp a number of times and always got good feedback from engineers and civilians who heard it. and people always commented on the bass tone.

I recorded it direct and played it through a number of different amps at various venues, too. great bass!

from the lows,

since when are civilians and engineers distinct groups?

so would it be impossible to find a hardcase that would fit it besides the conklin one?

I wouldn't say "impossible", but like I said earlier.. given the bass' unconventionality you'll probably be hard pressed to find one that will fit properly AND give good protection...

Question is how much are you willing to gamble?
