The Fender Bassman 100T thread

Just heard from a fellow TB'er whose Groove Tubes are 6L6CHP 2, which is Groove Tubes' rating for early distortion and breakup. I would have thought that Fender would have gone for the 8-10 rating which Groove Tubes specifically state is for clean dynamic range and bass amps.
Must have a look at mine and see what they are. Has anyone else looked at theirs? Makes me tempted to try a little tube rolling, which is something I do not normally bother about until a tube blows - especially since I am very happy with the amp.
OTOH, to give Fender some credit after having come up with such a great amp, one would think that this tube rating was a conscious decision on their part and made with good reason since it would not save any cost.

Yea tim on mine they are #1 rated the lowest which is why im researching tubes to purchase. i called a mom pop tv repair shop thats been in business since the early 70's in my area. it is super rural so not alot of guitar/bassists in the area. they have NOS tubes. they dont have any 6L6's but they have txo 12ax7's and a 12at7 for my preamp. one ax7 is a GE and the other is a national and the at7 is also a national. from research the nationals could be hit or miss gems but well worth the deal he is givin me/ $37 for the three. i asked if he has a tube tester (which i really dont know what a tube tester is) and he does. so does anyone (maybe Jimmy) know what kind of test results i should be looking for? I know u test for microphonics and voltage i believe. Im so grateful for this TB community. i Feel like im in a special club:) Thanks for ur knowledge everyone! And yes im with you Tim. Why didnt they go with the 8-10 ratings. Especially when Fender and GT's are owned by the same company?

So i picked up these preamp tubes today and im about to swap em into my 100t. in V1 im puttin a GE 12AX7A 7025 made in USA i think the date code on it is ER 188-5 maybe? its old i know that. in V2 a national 12AX7A ECC83 made in hungary (might be a tungsgram) and V3 also a national 12AT7 ECC81 made in the USA. They all have grey plates. They sold em to me for $37 for the lot. Ill post a message on sound difference if im not too blown away:)

Well, this is interesting. Finally had a look at the power tubes on mine and they are Groove Tubes grade 5 white, which is a but more like what I would expect. Mine was one of the first ones out of the factory. But it does seem a bit strange that between three of us we have three different grades - 1,2 and 5.

Surprised they didn't put a pull tab on the 410 if there's one on the 115.

I own the 410 and there is a pull tab on mine !!!

Sounds absolutely awesome with the Super Bassman ! I am in heaven !

i'm so glad to see folks getting on the bandwagon with "lower" powered tube heads. i put lower in quotes because 100 clean tube watts is a lot of power with the right cabs! i've been gigging with a highly modded bassman head my whole gigging life, around 27 years. it's blown more minds than i can count. it's in the shop for a recap and other things so i'm making do with something else for now. and while i've pined for a little more juice at times, 90% of time 65 Clean rms watts (what it now puts out) has been more than enough. and most importantly drummers love it. can't wait to try out a 100T

Mine came with 4's in it.
I think they throw in any matched sets they have laying around.

Best Tone I ever had, finally enhancing my Ric and Lakland Tone at their best !

I'll agree 100%.

I have a Super Bassman and Fender 4x10 neo cab on an open ended trial, and it simply kicks serious booty. I am an old Fender tone stack guy (literally and figuratively) and this amp is just great, makes my Jazz basses sing.

I have played the 100T and the Super Bassman side by side. As you would expect, very similar tone at lower volumes but the extra headroom of the 300 watter is clearly apparent if you want to really crank it for super volume. Some may prefer the extra features, lighter weight and lower wattage of the 100T, but to be honest you can't go wrong with either.
Me, I chose the 100T as I already had a 300 watt SVT head in the arsenal. TBH, I haven't used the SVT since the 100T arrived on the scene.
