The GHS Thread

kind of odd that BSO only stocks the standard long scale sets but not the long scale plus sets. GHS even shows there being long scale plus 5-string sets

Given that those actually fit a 35" scale.....Jason does sell them. Check the model numbers.

Cheaper I might add.

Packaged set of Progressives 4 string = $18
Same strings ordered as singles = $28

I just can't get on board with that!

I get that and wish it were differently as well. I would love to pay less! But the tone and feel are too good.

hmm, my mistake. what threw me off was them being listed as long scale and not long scale plus in the pre-packaged sets.

Ok...this is what I understand. GHS lists them as long plus and I've talked to a dude at GHS who said they would fit a 35 inch scale. Pressurewounds used to say the same thing; that they were long+ and would fit a 35 inch scale bass. I ordered a set form Jason and they did not fit. They were short so he measured and did research and found that they were only "long" scale. The prepackaged Progressives come with a "long" E so the E does not fit a 35 inch scale. Not sure if the B is long enough but the E wasn't. I think mmbongo had this problem.

I use a custom set of gauges so the 5 string packaged set isn't an option for me.

For some reason the pricing is not figured correctly on the progressive build your own string set option.

I'll try to fix that this weekend. Should be closer to the actual set....

I think there is some confusion here. From what I gather, GHS has Progressives available in three lengths:

Long Scale - larger strings only. 34" scale, 36.5" winding length. These actually should fit my 35" Spector but not my Lakland.

Long Scale + for smaller strings only. Winding length is not as critical and these should fit most anything. The .091 strings and lower are ONLY available in Long +.

Extra Long - Large strings only, 38" winding length.

So the Progressives linked above are long scale +, meaning the small strings are 38" to the silk, and the E and B strings are 36.5" to the silk, as proven on my 34" Brubaker:

The E and B strings are shorter. Not a problem on this bass, as it's 34". Might not be a problem on SOME 35" basses.

If you have a 34" scale Warwick, the E and B strings from a pre-packaged set will NOT fit. As far as I know, they do not have a pre-packaged set with Extra Long E and B strings.

How does the Progressive B compare to the Pressurewound .128 B?

The Progressive B definitely had some more clarity and definition over the Pressurewound B (for a couple of reasons). The Pressurewound B is still really nice, but like that set in general, it's more mellow and a bit darker sounding.

Out of the two, I still prefer the Progressive B. May look into stringing up my six with a Prog B and then Pressurewound E-C and see/hear how that works.
