The GHS Thread

I love Progressives, Super Steels, and GHS flats.

Boomers, OTOH, have sucked the tone right out of whatever bass I've put them on over the years. They lack the long-lasting, complex midrange I get from other nickel-plated rounds like D'Addario, Ernie Ball, and Dean Markley.

Pressurewounds sound intriguing, I should check 'em out.

Boomers have a unique sound compared to those other roundwounds, which is why personally I prefer them. After a break in they sound thick and deep, boomy one could say...

IME no string goes fump fump fump they way I want like a Boomer.

Had a chance to play them over the weekend as well as take the bass into "the office" this morning for a quick demo clip. The tackiness of the strings seems to disappear very quickly and the strings smooth out. Tonewise, well, you tell me. :)

Figured I would post an update since using these strings. I started a theatre production (~30 rehearsals/performances in a 4 week time period) a couple of days ago. The show is a jukebox musical, based around music of the late 50s/early 60s. So, I grabbed my Warwick Jack Bruce sig, threw the Brite Flats on it, shoved some foam by the bridge and cut the treble. I also am giving the fingers a rest and making my thumb work for that money.

To me, it's a completely different sound than what I'm used to and by itself sounds a little tubby, however when we heard the playback last night (they have a couple pre-recorded parts we did yesterday), the tone is to die for. It's thick, round and mellow, but still has a bit of sustain and character (when I really dig in).

The tackiness is kind of funny, because at this point there are spots on the neck where the strings are silky smooth (I'm sitting around the 5th fret for most of the show), and other spots where the tacky nature of the strings is still there (12th fret and up, obviously).

I should probably grab a can of FastFret and wipe down my strings, but don't know where to find one. ;)

UK based so these are not as common in music shops as our brit made rotos. I wanted a smooth feeling string with less thud than flats and after a bit of research decided to try Some ghs pressure wounds. Well they've arrived and I'm very happy so far. Gonna buy another set for when it comes to replacing them. Bravo ghs!

I would love to see GHS make a tapered B string (Boomers). A .135 maybe? ;)

I can always ask to see if it's something that's been mentioned before.

Thank you, sir! We're pretty proud of the Pressurewounds over here, and I like them personally for my basses as well (although in full disclosure, I don't have them on any basses at the moment).

Might try a set of boomers soon. Tonally, how is the balance from string to string?

Pretty good; the PJ I have in the office that's strung up with them has good balance across the board. Now, if I had the time to give it a proper setup... :crying:

Here's an audio sample, if you're curious.

Ok. Y'all have talked me into trying some Progressives on my DJ-5. I read through the rest of the thread and I wasn't clear about one thing: will they fit 35" scale through the body?

I don't think the tapers are long enough to work through body.

They work fine through bridge though, just make sure to get extra long. But in order to get extra long, you'll have to order singles, and sadly GHS charges more for singles :(

You're welcome! :)

Man...building a set of custom Progressives is a bit expensive. I was considering trying something a little less expen$ive but I just played the Progressives and they aren't going anywhere. Such a great sound and feel!

Packaged set of Progressives 4 string = $18
Same strings ordered as singles = $28

I just can't get on board with that!
