The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

After 2h of scrolling I finally made it to the end!

I gotta say this thread really makes me want to buy the SLO MKIIIs, especially since I can have one bought directly in Russia (~325 USD new).

To all the guys that have it - how does the cab emu section sound? I'm skeptical about this since the Two Notes Torpedo CAB M I have has some inherent hiss and some (albeit small) latency that makes running two signals to FOH impossible.
I also had the DSM OCSD (twice too) and while it is a great pedal, I couldn't get along with it so I sold it.

Also curious about what everyone here uses for overdrive and octave.
The cab sims work perfectly, without hiss, latency or other problems. Shiftline has a bass IR pack you can download for free or with a small donation via their website. I tested all of them and they work perfectly.
Let me know if you need more specific infos.

Ah, I haven't known that...

But doesn't it apply to any parallel processing? I am thinking simple parallel FX loop...

Yes, but don't overthink it.
When panning between pickups you're also combining different signals with different harmonic contents (frequency/volume/phase basically).

Basically either a combination emphasizes the frequencies you want more of, or it diminishes the frequencies you want less of, in which case it is good.
If it doesn't then you can try playing with relative volumes, adding relative delay, or flipping the phase (of only one of the two signals obviously).
If this still doesn't work then you go try other signal combinations (or stay with a single tone, always possible of course).

Or if all else fails you might just have to resort to using EQ ;)

Yep...that was my original point-that's not a big deal… Thank you.

I've run 2 signals to FOH for years and it's usually no problem at all. I used to use a Two Notes C.A.B. and a clean signal. Sure there is a slight delay, about 1,7mS but it's usually taken care of with the 180 phase shift.

I looked deeper into this because I thought it was a big problem and bought a Radial Phazer. Great tool but I don't think anyone could hear the difference. I spoke with FOH about it and we measured the two signals and put a delay in the mixing console, mostly to ease my mind but that was years ago. And now I don't see, or hear, the problem. I use a Shift Line Olympic mkIIIs and I think it's about 1,2mS latency. Not much to talk about. As said, don't overthink it. As I did. ;)

I'm having a crisis of faith moment. I don't know what to do. I have a Broughton Tube DI, the Arkham Oracle, and the Grace ALiX. I know it's all subjective, but I'm debating selling all the tubes off and having the ALiX be my DI, and some newer smaller tube preamps in-front of the ALiX to give any "tube tone" from there.

@scubaduba, how is the DI in the ALiX? Does it colour any tone or am I going to have to shell for an RNDI/Telefunken/Lightningboy?
Dibs.

I was using the ALiX DI out in my sound clips.

^^ This. The only reason I've spent this much time on latency problems is because I've had to deal with them with a few configurations when mixing analog and digital devices. It's not a problem until...it is. I'm a fan of configuring a live performance tone that works for everyone (stage and FOH) in a single feed (as much out of practicality as anything), which may or may not include an IR.

I'm not sure what digital mixers offer these days in terms of channel micro-delay, but years ago, our band built a home studio based around the Yamaha 02r, and each channel (and IIRC group outputs, aux feeds) had a delay function (.1msec increments).

I recently did some recording combining a true analog dry DI with a pedal IR and the combined signal suffered greatly. Knowing that the latency of the pedal was 1.2msec, I shifted the dry track to align, and...MAGIC!

I shouldn't have resubscribed to this thread again. GAS is bad enough normally, but with no gigs, we all sit at home obsessing over our tone rather than gigging!!
Yeah, it's bad. I now think I need a $1K+ worth of tube preamp and tube DI...especially as almost all my gigs are DI/IEM.
From another thread, I could certainly use a new 15" cab for when I use a rig, which is like 5 times a year so I can have that big, full bottom for jazz and musical pit gigs. :rollno:
I bought headphones for recording - $99. Fortunately, I had everything else (an old Apogee Jam that still works fine) I needed to do bass tracks in GarageBand.

I agree with the studio part. If the signals are time aligned it's all of a sudden MAGIC. And I have to admit that I'm not sure if our FOH guy do something about it or not. But it sounds great...

NOPE!

Sounds huge!

None of these were on my radar 6 months ago :D

The struggle is real...

The Oracle is really enticing, but as my Hub has joined my Zuma and HXFX power supply/power strip underneath my board, I don't know that I have any more room to cram a DI under there too. Not sure how I feel about having to cart around an outboard DI, but you guys make the Oracle sound like it's worth it (best thing since sliced bread? ;) ). Hmm... Maybe if I try the Oracle, the Hub could go back on top because I wouldn't need the Edison and could fit a DI underneath.....

*Sigh*

I should probably unsubscribe from this thread for the same reason as @Rocksolid mentioned. lol My G.A.S. list has expanded a lot since joining this thread.

The DI in the Grace products are top notch. You won't need an outboard DI.
