The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

Current practice room setup:

Bass—>Sadowsky preamp (if passive)—>Broughton LPF/HPF—>Effectrode LA-1A—>Khan VTDI—>Sadowsky SA-200 tube amp—>Bergantino NV115.

Don’t hate me. This is the culmination of a years-long search for tone. Can you tell I’m into tubes? :D

Would anyone change the order?

Seems like it should work just fine. That’s a lot of tubes.

I'm glad I didn't sale the Khan. I got a chance to play it live with the band a couple times and am really impressed with it. Actually using it after my Nordstrand Starlifter preamp and was very impressed. Drummer and sound man loved it and begged me not to ever get rid of it. Really makes a difference when you have a good sound engineer on hand. Had it dialed in perfectly.

Still smiling with the REDDI. Sounds great at church and I've done a few recordings for a friend. REDDI to Focusrite to GarageBand.
Same here. I just busted it out for the first time in a while at home and it still sounds awesome to me as well, although I did borrow an SVT-DI a couple years ago and loved it for different reasons. Just not enough reason to buy one with the REDDI and PF-50T here, especially since I ended up changing careers.

What is the "Zod?"

If only the REDDI had an effected line out to feed into a bass amp with the DI, I'd buy it tonight!
I let that keep me from buying one for a while. 95% of my playing is in a DI/IEM/Silent Stage situation. When I am using an amp, it's often for a jazz quartet or singer song writer type gig at a farmers market of winery. I have a little combo amp (Genzler) that I use for that. It's not tube and not quite the same but for now, I can't justify an Ampeg PortaFlex for 4 -6 gigs a year. Maybe someday if I end up doing more of those. For now, it's church and cover band with the DI/IEM set up.
