The Great Bass Preamp/DI Comparison

The Aguilar Tone Hammer pre/DI does not have an on-board compressor circuit as such, but using it in AGS mode (even at low gain) does compress the signal quite effectively. It takes 9V batteries and will run on phantom power.

I have one of the old Fishman bass pre/DIs as well, which has everything on your wishlist. It's designed more for double bass, but works perfectly well as a clean pre for electric bass. Can't speak for the newer models, which are fancier/pricier, but there are other threads about them.

@Doug Bright, two great options right here. The newer version of the Fishman has a tuner.

@chadhargis do you know how long the IR samples can be in the M-vave Cube Baby? It says the rate is 48 kHz, but I coulnd't find any info on length.

( btw Eko also sells (od sold) these effect pedals, Eko Baio. )

I don't know. I haven't loaded any. I did keep the Cube Baby just because it's so cheap and it's a good practice rig with headphones and bluetooth.

RNDI vs Grace Bix/Alix? Without looking at the features as much as how it sounds?
I used to run my Alix into my RNDI.....but recently I've just been using the DI on the Alix, and haven't noticed an appreciable difference - at least live (I haven't done any direct testing where I'm trying to pick out the nuances of each). I love my RNDI - I think it sounds wonderful - and I may end up going back to running my Alix through it occasionally when I feel like it....but I guess I'm saying the Grace Design DI is going to sound good enough for most that I don't think you'd necessarily need another DI (I mainly use the RNDI for my main board, and the Alix is just for my acoustic bass/upright board....so I didn't buy the RNDI because I felt I needed it for the Alix. I just used it because I already had it).

Since I've been living in the modeling world with the HX Stomp and nothing I've tested since has dethroned it...I dropped the big coin on a Quad Cortex. Sadly, the QC is backordered and I don't have a date when it will arrive yet. I'm sure my Sweetwater rep will be calling me soon.

Gonna see if the Quad Cortex and knockout my HX Stomp and if it can do a realistic capture of my Ampeg tube amp.

I've been using a Stomp for a while now. I downsized from a number of pedals and a REDDI. I just added a Khan tube DI. I don't use a lot of effects at all. My Stomp is really for my "Noble" preamp, comp, chorus once in a while and I like the pitch shift for my 1/2 step down needs. That's really what's keeping me digital. If I decided to go back, I could very easily get by with my GLXD+, the Khan, maybe a compressor, maybe a chorus, maybe a drive. Before I went Stomp I didn't use a chorus or drive and no one seemed to care.

I was curious about the QC, but it was pricy. I do like the "itype" interface. Then again, if a Stomp is more than I need, so is a QC.

After a day with the Quad Cortex I suspect you will drop the Stomp and never think of it again. Look up scubaduba on the Cortex Cloud and download my Secret Sauce capture. Put it first in line and thank me later.

Whoop! There it is. Scuba and I have very similar ears. So I'm sure I'll love that capture.

I'll be capturing my PF-50. I am going to see if a friend of mine will let me use his studio to get a capture of my Barefaced cab.

I priced out the following:

Origin Effects BassRig Super Vintage Preamp/DI
Origin Effects DCX OD
Origin Effects Cali76 Compressor
Aguilar Chorusasaurus
Aguilar Octamizer
Walrus Canvas Tuner
Ciocks SOL
Pedaltrain Nano+
George L patch kit

That came to $2300 and I get ONLY those options. The QC is $1800 and has all the built in effects and emulations, plus the ability to do captures of my current gear, and the Neural Cloud.

When you look at it that way...it's a steal.

There probably already are captures of the PF-50 on the Cortex Cloud. I know there are PF-20 captures because I ran one for a while. But my favorite is my patch which includes my Secret Sauce capture into my WRA Goliath capture into a little bit of reverb into my Lightning Boy tube DI capture last in chain. That is a solid huge tone.

Can't wait to give it a try. The QC is on backorder, and I read somewhere that they may not ship until November. But I'm fully paid, so I should get one of the first ones.

Worth noting, don't count on captures of compressors. The QC can't capture those nuances. The built in compressors in the QC are not all that great in my opinion. Serviceable, but I run a separate compressor in front of my QC. But, well, I am particular about compressors. :)

A SOL wouldn't be the right device to power a QC either. The CIOKS DC7 with four parts and parallel adapters would work though.

Yeah, I am concerned about that. I will be hanging on to the Becos Stella and may run it in the effects loop like I do on the HXS. That way I can move it anywhere in the chain I want.
