There are of course other amps I'd like to purchase at some point down the road, but this is the rig I could be completely happy with for the rest of my natural born life.


What is your Rig?

Sunn 2000s into 2xSunn 2000s cabs loaded with JBL K140s (I don't always use both cabs, and for small venues will use an old Ampeg B2 combo cab)

How Long Have You Had It?

DIY 2000s Cab - 2 Years
Sunn 2000s cab - 1 Year
Sunn 2000s head - 1.5 years

What Do You Love About It?

Pretty much everything. For me, it just has THE tone. With my P-bass and Nickel Swing 66s, it's just a bone crushing monster. It has the perfect overdrive, and being based on old Dynco Hi-Fi circuits, produces a huge, balanced wall of sound. Interestingly enough, I've just been doing some recording with my band, and the engineer and I were mucking about, and tried both DI'ing my bass and Mic'ing the amp. Surprisingly, the sound of the DI and Mic weren't all that different. The Sunn had a warmer, cushier feel to it, but did an amazingly good job of producing the untampered DI sound of the Bass. With this rig I can go from Entwistle at Leeds (or rather, Fillmore East '69) & Geddy Lee on Fifth Order of Angels biting overdriven snarl, to Jack Bruce/Mel Schacher fat, billowing clouds of bass. It's everything I want for my sound. It also has all the original valves (sans the preamp valve), U.S. Tung Sol 6550s and British Mullard rectifiers. Plus, it's a glorious onstage sight to see a full Sunn rig, makes me feel just like some of my idols (Felix Pappalardi, Noel Redding, John Entwistle).

Main rig is an Aguilar DB750 into 2 - 4 gs112's

How Long Have You Had It?

Been running the gs112's for about 5 years with the tFunk 750a and now with the db750 for 6 months

What Do You Love About It?

It's big, fat, articulate without being hifi. 2 gs112 are awesome 4 kill.
Being modular does not suck.

What Kind Of Bass Do You Play?

5's mainly. Sadowskys, Nordy, MTD 535, Benavente, Ristola and Warrior.

What Kind of Music Do You
Rock, country rock, country and worship.

What Kind Of Venues Do You Play?

Bars, Church and outdoor events.

I have a GK MB115 combo amp. 200 watts thru a 15" speaker.

Bought it in February of 2011.

I love a few things about it. It's very portable and it's light weight. Fits into the back seat of my Ford Focus with no problem. For an old guy like me with a bad back it's great.
It's got a very punchy sound to it that projects very well. I like how I can "dirty it up" a little bit by using the gain. (Just a bit). Seems to give the sound some character which is nice. Sometimes too clean of a tone comes across as rather "meh."

My only gig these days is at church. Depending on the songs we do depends on what bass I'll bring for that particular service. Sometimes it's my Fender American Standard 5 string Jazz bass. Or I'll bring my '73 Jazz bass, my Squire VM fretless Jazz bass or my MIJ Precision bass. Each bass has it's own character and I've had no problem finding the right sound for each.

I also go direct which means when you get right down to it, my amp is basically just a monitor to hear what I'm doing. But the soundman said he's never had a problem getting a good sound out front and others have told me that my sound comes across pretty balanced.

All in all and for what I do and for the volume that's needed it fits my needs perfect.

u84, i used to have a TBP-1 pre with Fender power amp and that rig just killed! I think Fender's top line amps are highly underrated.

I agree! Very underrated. I tried at least 30 highly praised amps before choosing the Fender. It could be the weight that sways people, because it is 30lbs. But seriously, IMO, weight still wins in the sound quality department. :) I get compliments on my sound all the time, and that never happened prior to this rig. ;)

I'll play....

I am the frustrated farmer. If I died with what I have today, I'd be alright with it as it sounds good, but complete satisfaction only happens when you're dead. Until then, something could always be made better.

I'd tend to align more with Passinwind's take on stuff rather than someone who said "this is my stuff and I'm done". Life and experience is a never-ending education and if you drop out, you lose out.

That said, I'm happy with stuff that was made mostly 20-40 years ago, bit I'm also one of these who can't seem to own anything without taking it apart and seeing what's in there, trying to make it better.

My G.A.S is more for knowledge of how all thos crap works rather than getting a bigger pile of crap.

Obviously, I'm of two minds on this.....:p

What is your Rig?
SWR 550X head powering a SWR Goliath Jr. 2x10" cab and SWR Son of Bertha 1x15" cab.

How Long Have You Had It?
Not long. Got the 550X off the TB classifieds the summer of 2011 and got the cabs used from Guitar Center and Music Go Round as a Christmas present for myself this past December.

What Do You Love About It?
It's not alot to tote around (I can fit the entire rig with the head in a 4U rack into the back seat of my Grand Prix coupe), it packs a punch and has great tone that blends with the mix yet can cut trough and be aggressive when I need it to be.

What Kind Of Bass Do You Play?
All stock Peavey USA Cirrus fivers and sixers.

What Kind of Music Do You Play?
Anything from country to metal, funk to punk, you name it, I've got songs in my repertoire to cover it (even old Irish drinking songs!)

What Kind Of Venues Do You Play?
Anywhere from small dive bars to small arenas and outdoor pavilions.

How Long Have You Had It?
1 year for the mb500 about 3 months for the mb800
1 year for the cab (LDS 15/6 for two yrs previous)

What Do You Love About It?
The tone is full and chest thumping. I also have a 15 band eq I use with it which allows me to sculpt my tone to suit the situations I play. I built the cab out of Italian Poplar and it weighs 43LBS. Amp is 5. So yeah, loud, portable and excellent tone.

What Kind Of Bass Do You Play?
Stambaugh Jazz shortscale on gigs 100% of the time.

What Kind of Music Do You Play?
New band is all rock covers, previous band rockabilly blues.

With the VB99 , I can reproduce all the bass tones in the world.

Pretty much set here, 98% at least.

Markbass Little Mark III head.
Two Markbass Traveler 151P cabs.

Less than a year old all together. Got the head last spring and one speaker. got the other speaker last fall.

Tone is great (I just started a thread about it). Lightweight, just the way I want it. Speakers could be a bit lighter, though.

Play a 2001 American Jazz and a 1987 jazz Pass Special, both with flats.

Play mostly pop and classic rock, and country (old and new). Some beach music when needed. Jazz as needed, too.

Playing at resaurant/bar venues a lot, sometimes country club ballrooms, and a few outdoor festivals and private parties at various kinds of places.

Killer low end, good attack, plenty of volume, relatively simple interface - and super reliable.

StingRays (strung BEAD), vintage Fenders, homebuilt Fender-ish axes, G&Ls, a few Gibsons, occasionally a Carruthers EUB.

What Kind of Music Do You Play?
Rock tributes (INXS and STP), blues, alternative, country, whatever pays.

What Kind Of Venues Do You Play?
I've used this rig everywhere, from divey Hollywood rock clubs to ratty blues bars to outdoor fests and big casino stages. If there isn't a backline provided by the venue (which happens about 40-50% of the time for me these days), then this is the rig I always use.

Everything! I suppose it's versatility is the most meaningful aspect to me, but the sound is amazing - from incredibly clean and articulate to warm and soft. I can get any tone out of my rig.
