F7 is an '87, the first year for Soundgears. Your serial # is probably on a silver sticker; Ibanez went to a serial # decal in '88. They usually didn't put a model # sticker on the back of the headstock in '87, but I know a guy who has an 'SR1000' sticker on his '87 800.

I just started playing about 2 months ago, and picked up a used GSR200. Not the best guitar I know, but so far I'm really enjoying it. Plus, with how little I know so far about playing a nicer more expensive bass would be wasted on me.

Yes, it's a silver sticker on the back of the headstock, and also the same sticker in the control cavity.

It just says "Serial No.", the number, and "Made in Japan".

I bought it in early 1988. I didn't realize it was an '87! (unless I just don't remember... that is a long time ago!)

it could've been manufactured in late 87 to be an 88 model like how mine was manufactured in 89 and is a 90. i've seen fenders like this.

Hello all, Wondering if any one has had a similar experience....I just purchased a new Ibanez SRX 650 from an online catalog company, supposedly at a close-out price....$299. Ok UPS comes in a couple 3 days...I open the box and the guitar is ok except for the quality of this instrument is terrible... the frets were all like razors on the ends...the finish on the body looked as though it had swirls and crazy looking letter like YY MM in the wood (natural clear coat). I have 3 other Ibanez's which I consider excellent. I had to send it back today for a refund. Is Ibanez slipping on quality control or could this be a counterfeit made in China?

I bought an SR300 from one of those online guys a couple months ago. It had the ever smallest ding in the forearm cutout but the price was smokin and it was in my favorite color (orange) The fret sprout on it was atrocious! It got worse over the next couple weeks and then I took a file to it. Mine has an S stamped into the headstock so I knew it was a second when I bought it and Colorado is nasty dry so I expect it. On the other hand I bought an ATK with no problems and my 93 SR is perfect. I know, absolutely no help, just thought I'd comment.

There's always a reason why some basses are cheap.

Then again, my S-marked SRX2X1 has worked amazingly well for 16 months, best $210 I ever spent on an instrument.

They can't all be perfect, especially when mass produced. Unless you are doing small runs where each bass is hand and eyeball checked for quality, you are going to run into some lemons. Its just the way it goes with mass produciton of....anything, really. If its a product you are really interested in, then I'd get it replaced and try again. Randomnly buying something only to find its a lemon is no reason to indefinitely doubt a company and its products. Now if you get a replacement and its in similarly bad shape, then you'd have several reasons to be concerned.

Yeah, there's no way to make a $200 bass and get the fret ends filed, or even get the frets leveled! But put a little work into it and it can be a good bass.

They sure didn't have good cheap basses when I started.

Thanks fella's for the input, guess I'll bust out my old SRX 300 this week and forget about it. although I really got GAS for a SR500 now, maybe save some more cash and get one. seen one that another bassplayer had.... looked and sounded good dammit.

How do those date codes work? Mine starts with F7. Mine is a SR885LE, but there's no sticker with the model on it. I've never even seen it in the catalogs from back then, only the SR05.

If I remember correctly, over a period of time, they switched the system from the first letter of the serial number from indicating the month it was produced to indicating which factory it was produced. So that F probably means that it was made at the Fujigen factory in '87. Maybe since it's a SoundGear, the newer serial number system applies to it?

Well, here's my Ibanez Soundgear bass

And according to that link given up there, it was made in the Fuji-gen factory in 1989 which makes it older than me.....
Now I did some googling and I think it's the SR1000E model.
(And finally finding out the model is a huge thing for me since I bought is as used merchandise and I didn't know what model it was..)
