If you find you don't like the sound, keep the girl, ditch the strings and try DR Sunbeams...have them on a BTB 1305e prestige, Cirrus - 6, and MTD fretless - 6. Articulate, fat, punchy and long lasting tone. Caveat Emptor - "performance not typical, average weight loss is 1-2 pounds per month, serious side effects such as nausea, hair loss, chest pain, impotence and bloating may occur. See your physician immediately if you don't like these strings or if you experience bleeding out the ears.

My four month old Ibanez SR605. Love this bass, but currently going through an endless search of finding a deep bass tone. Currently strung with D'addario Chromes... So far not very impressed with the tone :/ waiting for them to break in. Might go back to half wounds. Damn this string thing is killing me! Lol

I recommend You to try Ernie Ball Coated Slinkys (roundwound), very rounded full range bass tone with lots of bottom and low mids! ;)

Hmm is that right... I had been leaning more towards the half and flat wound side since they're supposed to be mellower than rounds and whatnot... How do the coated slinkys feel on the fingers? I've used a set of Ernie balls before and they didn't have much friction, but I do favor a smoother string.

Well, ...I realized that You prefer flats, ...but Coated Slinkys are much mellower than regular ones (I use them), ...I also recommend You a brand new model of EB Cobalts, ...I didn't tried those Cobalts yet, but guys who did said that Cobalts are even smoother under the fingers with more low mids increased, only a little bit brighter than Coated ones!

Just sayin'! ;)

There are actually a wide variety of string brands and styles available for headless basses.

Most major manufacturers have a few double ball string offerings.

I have a set of D'Addario nickel rounds on it at the moment.

I have a set of Status stainless round wounds waiting to go on.

Status offers double ball strings in round wound, half-wound, flat-wound and vintage black nylon. Status also offers a "build your own set" which I did, so my set will be well balanced in tension.

The AXB1000 was one of Ibanez most expensive offerings way back in 1986 when they were released. It has low-impedance active pickups and active bass/treble eq as well.

It is super compact, very comfortable, balances great, and feels like it was cast out of billet given it's neck-thru-body construction.

The only downside I have found is that I can't hang it on the wall next to my other basses.

I guess they aren;t nearly as rare as I would have thought!

In other news, I have been looking at various SR800 models lately as the prices are pretty reasonable these days and i like that it has an actual 3-band eq with mid sweep, not a "style sweeper" instead of a mid control like a lot of SR's i've seen have. Anyone have experience with this preamp? The "Vari-Mid 3-Band EQ"

I had an SR400 for a while and while it was pretty flexible, (and had an amazing neck) the EQ always sounded "fake" to me, like it was obvious the tone was digitally altered by the EQ and was really unnatural sounding. Does anyone know if the SR800 suffers this issue? That was why I sold my SR400, because I didn't like the "fake" digital sounding preamp.

Well, I am late to the club. Pardon me, please.
I have a Roadstar II, model # RB885 if I am not mistaken, that is the Ibanez early take on the 5 string bass. Mine is from '85. Ebony board, active PUs, just a really nice bass. It was my only bass for ~ 12 years or so. Modded with a Kahler bridge that required a move of the bridge PU. No longer stock, but smokin'. Played it so much, but I had played fretless for ~ 6 years previous (again, with an Ibanez [Musician model # 940]), so really wanted a fretless model...

But wait, I also have another one! So enamored with my main, I searched for another one to make fretless.Took about a year. Another '85, made a couple months from the first one I have. Except for the fretless thing, it's totally stock. Really like this bass, but it is really no comparison to the fretted 5.
They look great together on my wall of fame.

Not sure how many of these 5 string RS II basses were made , but I am pleased to have the 2 of them.

I just joined the club recently. I needed a bass to play after my stuff got stolen, so I borrowed my buddies '82 Musician. I fell in love with it. I couldn't find one with all the original parts, which made me really sad. But, I did find one with some EMGs, and actually I really like the way it sounds with the EMGs and it plays so well.

Heres my '79 musician I got from evilbay.

@PDGood - Thanks! I'm really happy with it. Fast neck, low action, and very flexible EQ.

It doesn't exactly sound like a P. You can definitely shape the tone to approximate that, but it's a different sound.

Does the P pickup on yours sound like a P bass or a more unique Ibanez tone?
I have lately begun to think that the perfect bass for me would have an Ibanez slender body and fast neck with a P-ish tone (although with active pickups). But I've never heard an Ibby sound like a P. Does this one?
