The Krappy Bassists Klub

Hello everyone here at talkbass.

I'd also like to join the Krappy klub. Last month I ordered a five string short scale bass, and today Kevin emailed me to tell me that it was complete.

I think it looks really nice. I'm also really suprised at how quick things have gone. It's only about a month since I ordered it, and it's already complete; I've never ordered a custom thing before, so I wouldn't know what to expect, but I think that's pretty impressive.

I'm in England, so shipping will probably take a week or two. Once I get it, I'll post photos and perhaps a recording or two.

That's beautiful! Did you send Kevin the bridge, pickups and tuners, or did he throw those on from his stock?

Heyo!My"FauxLembic" arrived 11"55AM 20th.Looks good after a coat of Howards Feed-N-Wax.A quick check found it tuned to A instead of Bb on the bass side.After fiddling with it for a few hours,I settled on a B in fifths on the bass side,so that I can tap the low C.And a tuning of D#in fourths so I can use the first fret EADGCF.I quickly found that although many trumpet the attributes of bass fifths,I found that I cannot do some of the bass lines that I know.Not having an lower open string.So I found myself tuning to fourths in the bass every other day to compare.It seems to me fifths tuning is great for those who want to play minimal bass.Then play a chord based on that note.Then play a melody on the melody side.But for those who wish to play a notey bass line(Think of Dixie Dregs Perpetual Reality)Well.Good luck!I think at sometime in the future I may have actual six string bass strings put on for fourths tuning,as the strings on the bass side are not really set up for fourths tuning.As for the balance.Perfect!One strap peg is behind the fifth fret,the other at the bottom of the body.Hangs just right at about 75 degrees.Oh! and I replaced the plastic knobs with Bloodwood wood knobs.Nuff said.

FWIW I tune all my basses in fifths (except for the one-string neck of the Krappy). It took about a month to get used to it.

I got a random e-mail via a Polish forum where I haven't posted in over a year from some guy asking me if I want to sell or trade my Krappy. Go figure.

Well, I finally got back in to town and check it out and it is awesome!
Check out some pics, uhhh, what's that honey? You left the camera at your office? :hmm:
Looks like I'll have to post pics next weekend when I get back again.
I'm trying out the "Meep Datched Reciprocal" tuning since the band I play in does a lot of songs in "C" tuning.
The wood is uhhhh, let me check................the fretboard is Brazilian Cherry wood, the neck is Mahogany, Poplar, and Brazilian Cherry, the body is....uhhhhh....feats the buck outta me, although it looks great.
The one thing that did surprise me was how compact the body of the instrument is. I'm actually very happy with the way it turned out!
The workmanship on the instrument is very "Krappy" (good quality) and the tone is very good.
All in all I am very happy with Kevin's work and the quick turnaround in getting the instrument. :D

Recent developments with the FauxLembic.I had some tension issues with the G and C string after putting on a set of D'Addario XL's for fourths tuning on the bass side.Too tight.So I replaced the .032 C with a .028 guitar string and the.045 G with the bass .032.Perfect!Now the A string on the melody side was a bit too bassy,so I replaced that with a .038 guitar string.I'm learning that when playing you really have to concentrate on tapping your fingers directly DOWN like a hammer to get a clean sound.I keep hitting the adjacent strings.I may replace the damper.It's not thick enough.Any one accomplishing harmonics succesfully?Later

i added some fuzzy velcro to the damper kevin sent, also stuck some foam under his damper, seems to do the trick... glad you're getting things ironed out, ge, you will have a truckload of fun with it! re harmonix: the action is so low that it seems harmonix haven't worked for me yet, they don't have the bell ring that a guitar gets... lemme know when/if you can get 'em working... and anyway the tone's so sweet ya don't need any stinkin' harmonix lol!! a tip that kevin gave me a while back, that seems to work for me- don't use the tips of your fingers, strike the string with the meaty part of your finger, it helps to dampen some of the other strings that might get accidentally touched and in general provides better control... i've found it to be true... don't be 'fraid to ask kevin, despite his protestations to the contrary he provides excellent support and always has tips to get you playing better... i wish the whole world ran as well as his lil' company... Krappy for President! also have had good luck with the megatar strings available on ebay and on their website, megatar.com; the price is ok, and the strings are very hi quality, just be sure to order the correct set, for you the bass bottom would work, i think that's what he calls 'em... cheers!
