I've often thought Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Neil Young's Arc, and Pat Metheny's Zero Tolerance For Silence should be considered a set ...and should be listened to simultaneously. (!!!!)
Funny you should mention that..last year I attended a sonic experiment event where 10 people with turntables each had a copy of Terry Riley’s
In C album and they all did the needle drop at roughly the same time, but of course, staggered. Then there was the slight variance of motor speed, and while the piece itself mutates and transforms, the randomness spread out over all that playback was increased. It was…a trip. I never had a problem with it, although I liked
A Rainbow In Curved Air and his album with John Cale,
Church Of Anthrax better, but in this format it was mind altering.
Incidently, one of the people on the crew was a drummer, Danny Frankel, who I am aquainted with. He played with Lou Reed in the 90’s, and I wanted to jokingly suggest that they should give
MMM the same treatment, but there were too many people crammed into the small space(right on the edge of Joshua Tree National Monument, an otherworldly place in itself)and I didn’t catch up with him.
