The Mike Lull Club Part 4

My new P4 got finished up today. Excited to get it in my hands!

My M5V was apparently Darryl Anders' 'prototype' to the DA5. I texted him after I got my my hands on it, to ask the history of it. He said he and Mike tried different setups, and settled on the OBP-1 and Nordstrands. I've used primarily Stingray5's for the last 20 years, - so at first, I found the OBP-1 to be REALLY strong and in your face.
But after using it live, and tweaking around, I've found it very easy to use in the mix.
Thinking about ordering a backup to this- with the same setup.
My M4V has the Bartolini/Fralin setup - which is fantastic itself, but the tones and mix are a little more subtle.
So basically - I love the OBP-1.

A delayed NBD for me. I've had this bass since November last year. I was delaying posting anything considering the amount of NBD threads that seem to morph into classified postings after the honeymoon phase is over. I've made some pretty stupid moves myself in getting rid some fantastic basses all for the sake of GAS!

A beautiful 34" scale LPB P5 - roasted maple neck (looks quartersawn) and board. I had some calls with Spencer before and after the purchase. I think he and the fine folks have taken up the mantle exceptionally well. Glad to have a Lull once again... this one is staying! Apologizing for the crappy cell phone pics in advance!

Awesome P5! For those in the club with P5s, how do the Lull P5s measure up when it comes to the commonly stated problems with 5 string Precision basses here on TB?:

i) Muddy low notes from B to Eb on the low string due to "the split coil pickup reading the B string excursions too close to the neck"

ii) 60 cycle hum due to the 5 string split coil design not being 100% hum cancelling (something about uneven number of coils?)

I've had 2 Lull P5s, one sold to a good friend, and my current natural- finished P5. Both are Ash w/ maple fingerboards and the OEM custom Duncan pup.

On both basses, the B string is hell-strong and both basses are dead-quiet.

Solid B string tone depends on a few things, I believe. Making sure the string(s) aren't twisted when installed, setting witness points, finding the optimum pickup height, and even string brand and type are part of the equation. People go back and forth about the best gauge for B strings, but I've had good luck with 130s and currently 135s. Lately, I went to the D'addario Pro Steels 50 to 135s (Lull OEM strings are Pro Steel 45-130) and these strings seem to be overall the best pick of strings for me and my playing style. I had played XLs in 45-130s, but the bigger-gauge Pro Steels with the slightly-less taut feel seems to suit well.

I've never heard of these "commonly stated" problems. This doesn't describe my Mike Lull PJ5, at all.
