The Mike Lull Club Part 4

I prefer the look of the originals, but the new pups sound SO good. I bought a hole plug for the oval side jack. You, know...so the tone doesn't leak out. But, I'm still looking for a more permanent solution. Before and after:

Are these the Clean and Clear or Warm and Wooly ones?

They definitely are a different look, but I like them. I get real strong Geordie La Forge vibes.

They are the Warm and Wooly ones. I went back and forth about going with them. I don't dislike the look, but it's completely different. In the end, I decided that the goal was to try something different, tonally, and these seemed to fit the bill. Tone before looks and all that. But, now that I'm thinking that the original set was shot, I *could* look for a more traditional look. But, I really don't know if I will. I like the tone I'm getting. A lot.

So nice to be back on Lull. I have owned several including PJ5's, a V5 and a P4. Certainly having regrets over letting the P4 go, but this V4 is smokin hot and scratching an itch for sure!
Aguilar pickups, 3.5 kg, 2 tone burst and best of all… Mike himself signed it off ♥️

I think I saw that bass on social media recently--not sure where, as I don't have IG or Facebook. I do have an old Myspace account, so maybe I saw it there. :)
But, my mouth dropped. So beautiful. Congrats on the new bass!

There's been at least a couple of MM-style Lulls making appearances that I know of. It's probably a by-request order. I'm sure they are most awesome.

I had considered ordering one, but didn't. Then one came in on trade, but I had just bought my Stingray Special (which is quite a good bass and holds its own).

I saw one and then that was it…it's been on the brain ever since. I doubt I'd do it, but, man, that would be sweet.

Got an M4V tone question for y'all.

I have an M4V (2022) with fralin pickups and the bart 2 band. It has the push/pull tone pot that switches active/passive and works in both modes.

With the tone all the way up even in passive mode, it has the brightest tone I've heard on any passive bass I've had. It gets really harsh and hissy, almost like an active preamp with treble cranked. It's not necessarily a problem as I can dial it down. At about 70% sounds more like most of my jazz basses with tone all the way up.

I don't find that last 30% very usable because it does seem to have a lot of noise in the signal even with pickups blended for hum cancelling.

I lowered the pickups but didn't like the change of tone.

Just wondering why this tone control specifically seems to have some noise.

I find the bass a lot brighter overall than many of my jazzes. It's chambered alder + Birdseye maple board.

found a lose wire on the blend pot, so the issue is it wasn't truly blending/humbucking on the center. That's sorted.

Definitely still a "bright" bass I'd say, you can tame it, but the neck Fralin pickup with the tone up doesn't sound as vintage voiced as some jazz pickups. Anyone else experienced that?

It plays and sounds fantastic, this isn't really a complaint. Just an observation. First and only Lull I've had in the house!

The only pickups I've tried with Lulls are the stock Seymour Duncans. I would say that my ash/maple M5V is bright in the way that maple boarded basses are typically reputed to be. Definitely a bass where you get clear harmonics and more "clack" off the fretboard than with many other basses. But the bass sounds great for the kind of playing I mostly do.

It's getting some Labella nylon tapes today which should be a nice balance as well. I think it has the stock D'Addario strings.

It sounds great. Just rolling off more treble than I usually do. The tone knob covers plenty of ground. I do wish for a bit more vintage smoothness off the neck pickup but I'll keep playing with pickup heights and strings.
