Yeah, definitely more than I expected. But they are killer for sure. Spencer talked about making a more affordable version, but I'm not sure what that entails. I'm sure the relic'ing would be the first thing tossed out, but I wonder if everything else would remain (i.e. MOP inlays, Luminlay, binding, etc).
I love my Lull M4V (18 years old this year, and was built by Mike himself), it's wonderfully well built, plays and sounds great, but there's just no way I'm going to even think about spending $9k for a bass. That's crazy!
I guess people have that kind of dough to drop on an instrument, and if that's your thing, go for it. But I wonder what the return is ... I mean is that bass somehow 3 or 4 times better than a $3k bass ? (which seems to be kind of a price point for better instruments these days).

Yeah, that's a justifiable response. I don't have the money for it. If I did, Spencer and I would have had a conversation about it ASAP. I'm new to Lull but I love their instruments and like supporting good people.
Considering the last batch of IMA4s went for about $8500, I'm not sure what the extra price is for. Both were relic'ed and have roughly the same specs. One had the TBird pups vs Jazz pups, and one has the pup cover. I think they're roughly the same otherwise, unless there was a ton of extra work getting the toggle set up.
I'm not pursuing one of these…they look (and sound) incredible though! Given the price, weight around 9 lbs (and considering what I already own)…just didn't make sense for me.
I try and stay under 8-1/2 lbs these days…one exception—my 10.4 lb '23 Warwick Thumb 6, but always sit while playing it. Otherwise, my heaviest bass (V5 Aged Olympic White, chambered alder, IR, non-heirloom) is 8.4…
Btw, my '25 NAMM M4V (also in pic below) is the most versatile sounding fav J4 I've ever owned! Chambered alder, roasted neck, ebony fb, with TF IPA pre, 8.0 lbs…
One way to look at it is that batch sold out fast just like all of the prior batches. If what you make instantly sells out, it tells you the price is too low.
That makes sense. You were just the most obvious (or so I thought) person I thought of when I reached out to Spencer before knowing the cost.

Happy to rejoin the Lull family! I bought this passive PJ5 (34") in Sage Green Metallic a few months ago from a fellow TBer. Matt at bassramp.com made the ramp. It's wearing TI flats and is a groove monster! Talked to Spencer about converting the controls to VBT but decided against it. Works and sounds fine as is.
I've had numerous PJs in the past, including a beautiful '66 P that I had converted to a PJ setup (I was a kid--what did I know?) and never really liked the way the two pickups worked. Something about the humbucking P and single-coil J prevented them from complementing each other. But this one has a hum-cancelling J and they work well together. I can get Jaco-ish tones from the J pickup and adding a bit of the P provides depth without really changing the J's character. The P pickup can go full classic Rocco and a tad of the J provides definition.

Sometimes including every possible option results in something less than the sum of it's parts. Sure it made someone happy though.
I get what you're saying, but it sure doesn't sound or look less than the sum of its parts. Doesn't matter anyway because even I could afford one, it's possible I wouldn't mesh with it anyway. Thankfully I have as much money as brains.

Look what's coming to me next week! It was just finished by the great team at Mike Lull Custom Guitars.
Last year, I bought a used PJ430, but when it arrived it had some issues. The main one was tone pot made bad noises when turned and the pickup screws seemed to have been messed up, so I returned it.
I did like the feel of the bass and decided to go straight to the source. I ordered new P shaped short scale with the Lull Thunderbird pickups. It also has the IMA style VVT, but I honestly don't know how much of a difference I could tell between that setup and a more generic electronics.
This came in under 8 pounds and is incredibly comfortable to play. The pickups have a heck of a punch. They're certainly hotter than any of my other basses, but they're dead silent with no hum at all.

Just received my new M5! Spencer recently posted this stock build with chrome hardware (first pic below), but I had the shop change to black hardware, before shipping to me. Love the black much better, but what do ya'll think—chrome or black? : )

Question: Bass is coming this week. I noticed from the photos that there are unusually many windings per peg. Is that a special tactic or should I reinstall them once the bass gets in?
I was under the impression the strings should have 2-3 good windings and be cut.
Did you buy a short scale? It looks like they put 34" strings on it. Mine came that way. Sounds fine. I'll change the strings eventually to proper short scale strings. They ship with D'Addario nickels.
