I used to use nothing but SS, and mainly DR's. But since playing Lull's especially the M5, I find that they are so aggressive already that Nickel works better with them. I have tried both the XL and the DR Nickel's. I really like the soft feel of the XL with the 35 scale length (but in general like the tone of the DR's more). The XL's make the bass feel very comfortable and more give the string more bendability with the 35", but that might just be in my head.

I wasn't a fan of the Sadowsky strings. I really like the DR's though. I would be carefull with the longnecks though. Maybe Vic can explain further but they didn't fit my Lull correctly. Could of been a bad set.

It's not just in your head Bro, my neighbor who plays Lakland 5's with DR Marcus strings keeps commenting on how much tighter the tension on my Lull is. Since both basses are 35" then I assume it's the strings, which works for me... I like the tight string tension.

I have an M5 as well and have settled in with nickel strings too. I have actually been using the Carvin/LaBella strings for the Lull. They are more mellow (and cheaper) than some nickel strings (I also use Sadowsky Blue Label and Smith Burner nickel strings on other basses). The Carvin/Labella strings seem to work really well on the M5. A while back I had some work done on it by Mike and he shipped it back with his nickel strings which I liked, as well.

I used to use Carvin strings as well, when I had my Carvin 6 and I liked those too... Very warm, even if they didn't last as long as DR's they're cheap enough to keep buying. I just used my last set of DR's so maybe I'll give those a try again... Are there super long scale on those? Do they fit the Lull ok? I assume they do since you use them.

Haven't tried the Carvin strings. However, I wonder if the MTD strings would fit. I get a set of those every once in a while and WOW! Those are great! Don't know if they are long enough for the Lull though.

That being said, it does suck not being able to use some sets of strings, but this bass turned me on to the awesomeness of 35' scale.

I think the problem with the longnecks is the taper is too long and goes over the bridge pickup. They work fantastically on a body-thru strung Fender Deluxe, however. My faves for that bass.

Yep. The MTD's are also 35" scale. Just maybe not long enough for the B thru the body. Prolly have to top string it.

Thanks for all the inputs bro, I may get the DR Lo-Rider Nickel or go for Mike Lull string later and try again...

One more question, do you strung the B through the body with your Lull 5 string?

Um, well, I would like to. Honestly, I don't think it makes a difference, but I just like the through body design. The problem is that even longer strings may not be able to handle the through body.

The only ones that did work for me were Mike's, but those got mysteriously shorter, right Vic?;)

I know the best thing to do before I ask is to go back through this whole thread - but honestly, I am lazy. :hmm:

Does anyone have a fretless Lull? M5V specifically, but any model will work too... Or does anyone have pics they're keeping around?

My GAS list changes almost daily but a fretless has been a mainstay and I was thinking how great it would be to have another Lull... I missed out on the PJ5 on eBay recently. :crying:
