The New, New Julie Slick Thread

And still no Florida dates.
Sorry man, I feel your pain. I'm fortunate to be close enough that I should be able to catch one date on the Northeast mini-tour (although it will still involve a 3- to 4-hour drive and an overnight stay). There are people all over the country (and Europe) that would love to see an extended tour, but I guess not quite enough to support a more extended tour.

That said, I think it's possible that you could help make a Florida mini-tour happen at some point if you were able and willing to help out: e.g., if you had some contacts at some appropriate venues and could help with some skid-greasing and logistics. If you have some ideas along those lines you should contact her and see.

In other news, here's a video that was just released from one of the trio gigs in Spain. This is one of my favorite tunes on From Two Balconies. I'm hoping that maybe the whole show will eventually be released on DVD or in some other way:

I got nothing for you, unfortunately.

Here's a really good interview that was recently conducted as part of NoTreble's podcast series:

Groove – Episode #34: Julie Slick

It's pretty long, and unfortunately audio-only, but once I started listening I found it so entertaining I couldn't help but listen to all of it. The interviewer does a terrific job making the interview feel much more like a conversation rather than a simple Q&A, but without getting in the way.

You know I love both of you :) But man, I really miss her playing the bass. I'm selfish that way.

Pretty sure I am hearing in her playing a clear "Quotestring" to a certain guitarist that might also be a mutual admiration. Thanks for the post - keep it up please!

Sorry for the (very) delayed response. I thought for sure I had "liked" it and responded to it shortly after you posted it, but evidently I only did so in my head. (Not the first time.) Anyway....

I totally get your point: Julie's 4-string (and more recently, 5-string) playing is amazing, and what put her on my (and lots of other people's) radar. But, Holy Canoli, what she's doing now with a VI -- not to mention with composition -- is unique and (to my mind) utterly brilliant. If you haven't already, please check out the set in the immediately preceding post (#68). I think this trio version of EchoTest really highlights this whatever-it-is-that-she-is-now-doing -- as well as Marco Machera's playing and singing, which is worth a thread of its own.

Note: You really want to watch this entire set, as it evolves over time and seems to just get better and better until the end. And you certainly don't want to miss the finale, which is a cover of King Crimson's "Indiscipline" with Marco doing the vocals in Italian and Julie eventually playing laying on her back.

Thanks much. If not for you Lobster11 I would probably not know as much about her latest adventures.
I have listened to some of her interviews, and watched the above set. Thanks for the post!

It's an interesting thing to me that VI's are getting attention recently, at least in my warped perception.
In Chicago, there was a Sound Opinions radio segment on "The Bass VI". And other thread(s) here recently.
I happen to own one, but like many I think, I have been sooo busy that is NOT the bass I pull out often.

God - to be young again and able to play like that and compose like that! Another thing I believe is true
about Julie ( and I could be wrong ) is that I think she spends a lot more time practicing and playing her music
( and enjoying life ) than she does pining-over gear! ( oh no, I hope nobody else at TB reads this :)

Wishing Julie many happy years ahead. Keep us posted!

The original 6-string basses and baritone guitars are a unique world. They can sound like basses, and John Lennon and George Harrison used to split bass duties on a Fender Bass VI when Paul McCartney played piano or acoustic on Beatles tracks. But mostly they're made to sound like detuned guitars, and Julie's no exception, although she also makes hers sound like otherworldly instruments that don't exist in nature :D

Happy New Year, everybody!

First, some bits of news:

1. It appears that there will not actually be an ABPT tour in the Spring. The gig in Clearwater, FL (see post #73) on Feb. 1 looks to be a one-off, followed by the "Cruise to the Edge" cruise out of Tampa on Feb. 3-8, and that's it.

2. EchoTest will be doing what also appears to be a one-off show in Kennett Square, PA on Feb. 17.

Second, a thought from me: In post #68 above, I provided a link to a recent EchoTest show in Spain without comment. I now wish to add comment, as I've watched this video 10-12 times since posting the link. No "poopie": Honestly, this is one of my favorite live sets, by anybody, of all time, and every time I watch it I enjoy it more than the previous time. It's just Julie and Marco, with Alessandro Inolti on drums -- with a third (!) guest bassists on a couple of tunes late in the second set. In addition to being brilliant musically, the video is shot in a thoughtful and professional way that really allows you to appreciate what all the individual musicians are doing, as well as the overall effect. (Spoiler alert: The encore is a cover of King Crimson's Indiscipline, with Marco doing the lyrics in Italian and Julie playing while lying on her back....)

Just stumbled across this last night -- Julie playing a solo version of "1986" on Spanish television a couple of months ago:

If you want to skip the introductory chatter (in Spanish), she actually starts playing around 1:20 or so. I'd love to know what the anchors have to say before and after. Any Spanish speakers following this thread?

A couple of tour updates:

EchoTests's Alessandro Inolti sat in for Tobias Ralph on drums at the Adrian Belew Power Trio show in Clearwater, FL, and is also doing so on this week's "Cruise to the Edge."

The Kennett Square PA EchoTest show isn't a one-off after all; it's part of a mini Northeast tour (plus one left-coast show). Here are the dates:

2/14: Seattle: Ballard Substation
2/17: Kennett Square, PA: The Kennett Flash
2/22: NYC: Rockwood Music Hall
2/23: Southbridge, MA: Starlite Gallery
2/24: Dunellen, NJ: NJ Proghouse

And just for fun, here's a little video that just popped up of Julie checking out a friend's new bass:
