Good game in LA so far. That goal from Kopitar was beautiful, as was the pass from Brown to set it up.
I hope Phoenix can make this a series. It would be a bummer to have them get blown out at this point.

Yeah, we can agree there. Our 1st round pick was allowed to defect DURING his contract, much in the same way, and we got nothing back in return.
I don't know that I would allow them to go over the cap, but something has to be done to prevent this nonsense from happening again. I'm getting sick of it at this point. No one wants to hear about an Eastern European defecting to the KHL every time someone's contract expires.

Well I don't think New York, Jersey or LA are where they are right now thanks solely to goaltending. Phoenix is.

I never said solely, but I think La and Jersey are alot farther then any if us thought at the beginning of the playoffs and thier goalies have been hot giving them a chance and deserve alot of credit for where they are.
I think LA is where they are because of Quick. I was sure they were going to flame out in round one, being a #8 seed and all. Quick gave up eight goals to VAN and only six to STL.

You don't get this far without goaltending. That's a given. Quick is one reason LA is pwning, but not the only reason. Smith has gotten Phoenix to round three virtually by himself. That team had no business even getting out of round one alive.
The Kings have been riding Quick all season. There's no question he's the reason they are where they are. Without him, they would not have even been within smelling distance of the playoffs. They had the 2nd worst GFA, and had far too many games that they lost 1-0 or 2-1. If your goalie only gives up one goal, and you still lose, it's pretty clear where the problem is. The difference now is that the team finally figured out how to put pucks in the net at the other end of the ice. This isn't just a playoff hot streak for Quick, however. He's just solid - like he's been all year.
Also, don't forget that if the Kings had won one more game during the season, they would have been the 3-seed in the West, not Phoenix, and people wouldn't be quite so surprised that they're marching towards the Finals.

Remember that NJ finished the season with over 100 points. It's not like they just barely squeaked into the playoffs.
No team gets this far for one reason. Some reasons have a bigger impact than others, like Quick in LA and Smith in Phoenix.

Tom Renney out as coach in Edmonton.
With the talent he has for working with younger players you might expect to see Brent Sutter in place there next.

Phoenix hasn't been one-dimensional until now. Yes, Smith has been their foundation, but they were getting decent goal production in the previous rounds of the playoffs. At this point, EVERY team needs a phenomenal goalie, but that's not enough. The fact that Brodeur is the worst of the goalies still playing is a big clue about the level everyone is at.
