My P/MM Jake is passive with the series/parallel/single switch. My signal chain runs through a SanAmp VT Bass that I'm very happy with, so I wanted to keep it simple on the bass. Lots of tone options there indeed. I went with the Haeussel 4SP 10 and 4HB 10 pickups.

I am leaning towards passive, and perhaps a single-coil bridge/split-coil neck. I find active MM tone to be a bit brutal! Some of the passive pickups seem powerful enough for variety. And 32" scale, which seems like a nice compromise. Adrian reckons he can do it <3kg (6.6 lbs).

Very nice. I've been contemplating getting a medium scale 5 string Elwood with that finish.
I saw a similar configuration (but fretless) in an earlier posting, which gave me the idea.
I am curious about the useability of a 32" B-string! I'll probably go 4-string, though. The pitch shifting in the HX Stomp is excellent, and does a very good impression of a B-string from the E. But a 5er would be a simpler option.

My M basses are all medium scale too and my Frog even has that same bridge pickup (in a JJ config).

we did a custom 32 that came to 2,9 kilo with Alder body so yes. Swamp ash will get you even lighter.
That would be very nice. The split P pickup purists would say you won't get the true P bass tone, but I dunno.
Tone versatility yes, but if you are looking for classic p, j and mm sounds, you will probably only get close with humbuckers.
As already mentioned, I personally prefer passive basses. If you think you need the preamp, have it included.
Another question for me would be whether, at the end of the day, the tone versatility is really required and actually used. I mostly find myself using more or less one or two sounds and the tone knob.

I'm actually not sure, but here they are!
First is a 2011 fretted frog, mahogany/ash body, ebony fingerboard, glockengang 2band EQ, delano pickups, coil-split for single coil/humbucker (I didn't know about the series-parallel option back then, not sure if they were already doing that). No fancy picture from Adrian, since they didn't do that yet
Next up is my 2013 fretless frog, ash body, ebony fingerboard, bassculture pickups, passive electronics and a serial/parallel/single coil switch. The pictures were still taken in the showroom, I think the couch-shots we know today, came about a year later

I just had a bass similar to this one quoted. The Elwood configurator doesn't have Wenge necks or fingerboards, and doesn't have Delano Times Square pickups or the rotary switches, so I had to try and mock it up myself using the Elwood and Frog configurators and MS Paint. Doesn't have the right pickups, and the headstock won't be matching, it'll be Wenge as well. But it's close enough to give me an idea!
