If the differences are just active/passive you should check out the electronics they use. Most modern preamps that Adrian uses/recommends for their basses have a push/pull poti that lets you switch to passive mode. I think they don't use Glockenklang anymore but the Noll electronics in my Jake, and I'm pretty sure the delano pre's, have that feature.
The price is based on Delano pickups and pre. I didn't actually specify the brand, I just asked if he could do the short scale in active/passive and what he would recommend.
To be honest, I don't have enough experience with preamps to have a formed opinion, especially in the higher price bracket. What I can say is that the best sounding Jazz bass I have heard (IMO) is the Sandberg TT4 which has Delano pickups (and glock pre I think), both in active and passive mode.
I may still go for the passive version and see how I feel about the stock pickups. I play passive 90% of the time and can always add Delanos later if needed.

I've been talking to Sylvia's for a while and I'm about to put a deposit on an Elwood L custom. It will have Haussel pickups. I'm trying to decide on the preamp. I wanted Glockenklang but they don't offer it anymore. So for now it looks like Delano, but Noll is the other option. Can anyone give me any input regarding these two options?
Another thing to consider is the bridge. I want a 19mm aluminum (lightweight) bridge. They will not work with Babicz, and although the Hipshot Kickass looks cool it would add unnecessary weight. ETS looks great but they can't get the aluminum version. It seems like the Hipshot A-style is my best option, but wondered if you guys have any other input on the bridge?

My Elwood 5A24 came with the Glock. I had a problem with it, sound was cutting in and out. Adrian sent me a Delano Sonar 2 to replace it. Now, no problems. Very happy with the tone.
All I'm saying is, the higher end preamps give you a fully functional passive mode that completely bypasses the preamp and gives you a traditional passive tone blend as well. I wouldn't buy 2 basses, one active and one passive, if that was the only difference between the two since the active one becomes passive with the push of a button. Of course if you just need/want 2 basses (have one strung with rounds the other with flats, or whatever) that's something else. I assume the one he has in stock uses their maruszczyk pickups? I love the Delano pickups on both my Maruszczyk and Sandberg bass as well, I think they're fantastic. Haeussel and Bassculture pickups are also worth considering IMO, but that's obviously up to you.
I have the 3-band Noll pre in my Jake. Comparing it to the Glockenklang in my Sandberg they both work fine and sound good, the Noll has a noticably different EQ point for the treble and maybe colours the sound a tiny bit more with everything flat compared to the Glockenklang (both keep the output level the same though, so no sudden boost in volume if you switch from passive to active with everything flat). Both have a tiny amount of hiss (noticable with headphones, through an amp that's a non-issue IMO) and haven't given me any issues so far. Definitely check out the EQ points for both preamps, pretty sure Noll and Glockenklang both publish that information on their website.
For me it's a fully functional 3-band EQ and it's "the same" as the one in my sandberg, as in they both fulfill the same function to me.
I would go with Delano. I have one in my Frog, a Sonar 3 with Delano SBC pickups too, and it's very good. It doesn't peak out when you punch it. The treble on the Delano is voiced higher than the Noll, and although I've never compared the two side by side, I like higher treble voicings in general. The worst thing ever is when a treble control also affects the high mids a bit, so I avoid that as much as possible. The Sonar doesn't have the pure air sound of the ultra high Glock voicing, but it stays firmly in the sparkly treble realm.
In reality, all the preamps Maruszczyk offers are very high end. The Delano is great, but Adrian uses a Noll in his personal Frog and that bass sounds awesome. So you can't really go wrong I think.
It is totally true the statement about giving someone too many options!
I have never even considered a custom instrument before, the closest I have been to making so many decisions was on the Sandberg configurator!!
There aren't many photos of the Elwood shortscale online (at least that I have found), so I have been doing some photoshop comparisons between the 30" 32" and 34" to get a grip on the size of the shortscale. It seems that the 30" uses a much smaller body size than the 32" and 34" that are the same size. Out of the shorties I own, I prefer the ones with larger bodies, so I am thinking that the body of the 30" may be a little small for my taste. I just experimented and swapped the neck on my jazz, relocated the bridge to turn it into a 30" scale jazz with full size body and although it looks a little weird I actually like the way it feels.
The 32" seems to be a good option but I have never played a 32" scale before (at least that I know of), I have been trying to get a grasp for it by adding a capo to the first fret of one of my 34" and think that I will probably like it.
