Do you know if Adrian can move the Walbucker pickups to be in the exact same positions as would be found on a Wal (specifically a Mark II)?

(Perhaps he has done this for someone before? I wouldn't be able to tell him the exact measurements to do this, nor could I easily find out, but maybe he has this sort of technical information already?)

There's a Wal club, you might try asking there to get the dimensions you're looking for.

Yes, I found it, and found someone had asked the question - no one wished to answer it there… (Wal Bass Club.)

Someone in the club did measure the pickup spacing of the different Wals a few years back, but they put their results out in such a way that it is difficult for a non-Wal owner to replicate (Wal Bass Club.).

You could always do scale conversion of a Wal picture with a ruler. I'd be slightly concerned the pole pieces might not line up.

I missed my one chance to hear/play a Wal a few years back. Part of me wonders if his pickup placement might be more "useful". Hi-fi sounding pickups can possibly get harsh if you put them even closer to the bridge.

I also wondered about the bridge pickup on a Wal being so close to the bridge. I think the filter EQ probably helps to manage a tendency to 'pinginess' there, as you can alter the resonant frequency of the pickup and the amount of this as well. Pickup location is going to be key to getting 'the Wal sound', as well of course as the type of pickup and the EQ system. (It probably is less of a 'workhorse' bass with those pickup locations though.)

Messing with a builders routing templates could add time and cost.
Unless you are close to the builder and can check on this ad hoc process, I'd forget about it.
The process of buying 'blind' is fraught enough as it is.

Apologies for tagging you, I hope perhaps you can answer, in your capacity as a longer term seller.

In looking at the pickup positions of Walbuckers on the Jazzus, both from real life basses I have seen already and those spun up by the configurator, it looks like they are positioned quite differently to those on a Wal. Do you know if Adrian can move the Walbucker pickups to be in the exact same positions as would be found on a Wal (specifically a Mark II)?

I'll answer my own question here. I emailed Adrian directly and asked. He doesn't have this information already, but if I can email him the pickup distances from 12th fret to the centre of the pickup, he can do this.

Now I just need to get the information somewhere. Ideally I need to find a Mk2 Wal to measure, or an owner happy to share the info, but otherwise, estimate it from a photo.

Maruszczyk uploaded my basses couch photo today, which is the first time I've seen a high resolution version of it. Really happy with the way it's turned out.

Unfortunately, as it's been nearly 4 weeks since the courier collected it from the dealer I ordered through, I can only assume it's lost/stolen at this point. Disappointingly, looking like it'll need to be re-ordered.

I'm sure it'll be worth it when I get it (or a replacement) in hand, and none of this is the fault of Maruszczyk themselves, but I'd be lying if I said the shine hasn't come off the experience a bit.

This pickup placement request seems to be fairly common (I've made similar) and since this would be routing via CNC, there are no 'routing templates' involved but rather a quick change in the design file.

Since ordering a custom instrument is just that "custom"... don't 'forget about' any details that are important to you. It's your instrument and it's your money, so ensure you're getting what 'you want'

I'd highly recommend, for anyone that has very specific customization and/or configuration questions or requests... that you should communicate directly with Adrian via email or directly with a dealer that is placing the order on your behalf for a factual response to your question. This will help to inform so you can make the best decision for your custom order. This will help to ensure that your decisions on your personalizations (color selection, pickup placement, etc.) are not potentially or incorrectly influenced by mis-information prior to placing your order.

In my experience (and many others that have posted) for specific questions on custom requirements that are not already in the configurator - communicating directly with Adrian has been very effective as he has been very responsive and accommodating.

Such a bummer....Are you gonna make any changes to the new build if they have to make you a new one?

I've asked to change the logo to the full 'Elwood' one, rather than just the 'M' logo - other than that, my needs & preferences are still the same, so just asked to remake what I'd already ordered. Which I guess is good, if I haven't changed my mind so far, hopefully I'll be happy with it when it arrives!

I worked out from photos as best I can the pickup positions of a Wal Mark 2. Adrian seems happy enough with these and has confirmed he is ready to go when I am ready.

I am going to meet a fellow player in Glasgow next week who owns a Wal, and I can take some measurements to double check things. It's a Mark 1 as opposed to a Mark 2, but from the Wal club post I linked to I know how the different models change pickup position relative to each other, and I will have exact measurements of the bass to guide me. So this is good progress towards a Wal-alike.

I have found short direct emails with Adrian to be an excellent method of communication.

100% on all counts. At least you're thinking and setting realistic goals. Personally, I'd want his pickup config and would probably go with the East pre. On the other hand, if the bridge pickup were moved, might have room for a ramp between the pickups.

Very cool, this is going to be a great build, I'm looking forward to see this one come to life. I reached out to the only other person I know that owned a Wal to see if he still had it, but unfortunately he's moved it on.

I absolutely love this fretboard. To me it feels like ebony and it is very dense/smooth like regular Ebony. I would definitely get this on another build. My favorite fretboard out of all my other Basses.

Are they able to compare with the boutique builder like Fodera/Ken smith/Sadowsky/MTD?
