NBD: Used Hellwood Frog 2017. BC38's wwith 3 way switches & Sonor 3 preamp. Set neck. 18mm.

Came Wedensdays. I wondered how people take care of the Padouk. I know that oil is a no-no. It has some brwoning over the pickups that I guess has come from finger oil and dirt. Curious what others do to keep the wood healthy?

The story is that I wanted to find a new fretless as I haven't bonded with anything since getting rid of my Modulus, but wanted to move back to 34" as I aged. Before blindly ordering a fretless Frog, and felt like I should play a Frog and when this came up for less that $1900 I jumped on it as I had money in my music stuff account.

This one came with new XL strings that in the practice room seemed too bright with lots of stuff even about 5k even in a cab without a tweeter. I immedaitely put on old TI's, but after playing it last night with a band in a room with terrible mids and not hearing it cut through, I put on an set of Pressurewounds but really can't tell how they will work until I play them in a mix. Recently I have been just flats person, but thinking this bass will prefer rounds or something in-between rounds and flats.

I wonder what other people put on their fretted Frogs? Do any of you use a Frog for a tradtional R&B or rock vibe, and how do you tweak it? With just the neck pickup alone in series mode the sound was big, almost too big, and somewhat blurry. We did an obnoxiously long version of Cortez in the Gov't Mule tradtion, and even though I thought I adjusted volume, several people said the bass was too loud after that song. It was a big sound, but different than a Fender. I tried to cop the P bass with flats tone but not sure it got there even with the TI's.

The bass seems to have lots of flexiblity. Likely it will take some time to learn all the tones in there. Mostly I imagine this being a good bass for gigs with lots of variety or good enough to fit most gigs sound requirements, but maybe not the perfect bass for all settings. At first impression it seems suited for jazz type of stuff, maybe backing a singer songwriter, or some arty improvsational stuff. I am imagining a fretless version of the Frog would be even better in these non- R&B and rock settings.

The Frog reminded me a lot of my old pre-Gibson Tobais. Clean, clear, full range, easy to play (and over play), responsive, and subtle, but not the R&B rock sound out of the box that I get with a Sandburg VM. I can see now that the Frog would make an awesome fretless bass.

Any thoughts or comments are appreacated. I am happy to join the Maruszczyk club as I am really impressed with the build, playability, feel, comfrot, and just coolness factor. Like many of you I imagine another Maruszczyk or two in my future someday. Now dreaming of a fretelss Frog with the Delano extenders, and Jake or Elwood with Delano P/MM pickups for R7B and rock gigs. I think this is a club without numbers, but I will give myself #164.

Nice bass!

I would use Howard's Feed n Wax on that open porous wood. I use it on all my Warwicks with Wenge, Bubinga, Ovangkol, etc.

My Frog has a Noll pre with mid frequency and Delano split P and MM pickup in bridge. I definitely use it for blues/rock gigs and Cortez is definitely on the list :thumbsup: it's very versatile with those electronics and sounds great.

I have a fretless Paddock on order (it's the single cut version of the Frog) and will have Nordstrand Zen Blades and Richter preamp and Piezo saddles in the ETS 2-part bridge.

After having too much fun with the configurator, I placed an order for a Mr. Tee a few days ago thru 2nd Bass (dealer in Canada).

I've always wanted a silver sparkle bass so now's the time! I'm a P-bass guy (I have two Sadowsky HPJ and one PJ5) but always found the PJ setup not perfectly balanced volume wise, so I'm curious to try P+MM setup.

I would have liked a Sadowsky preamp in the bass but Adrian said I had to provide it and it seems to be out of stock everywhere. So I went passive with 2 volume and 2 tone, which I really like on a Lakland Hollobody that I have and use the Sadowsky pedal preamp.

Got a rendering and a quote. Apparently these are on the configurator at least internally at Maruszczyk. I'm bummed about no Hipshot D for the 5 string but for the price it's the closest thing I have found to what I want. Phoenix_Todd.JPG

The configurator and your photo are closer in color than the couch photo, I think they need to do some lighting calibration for their photography. :)

I only managed to test it with my practice Amp (a Nux 50b), but I'm loving the sound so far! The 4-way switch for the humbucker even works out better than expected :D
