I unfortunately agree. My bass didn't look anything like the configurator when "done". The neck and fingerboard were way off. After saying so Adrian said I should have specifically requested a certain darkness. That's what the configurator is for though right? And later he said there aren't many wood options available right now. I requested a new neck and it's not done yet almost 2 months later. I'm regretting my decision to order this bass more every day. It should have been my dream bass but it won't be.

I'm really sorry that you're not having a perfect experience, Esdamion. I completely understand that this sort of thing can sully what should be, as you say, a dream bass purchase.

Hopefully, it won't be enough to overshadow the other aspects of why we order a custom build - the tone, the feel, the incredible ease of playing that a Maru can offer - and that you'll be so delighted with the new neck that your initial regret will fade quickly :)

I'm not saying it isn't a beautiful bass in its own right, just not what I expected. Especially since the comparisons they do of configurator and couch pics because those all look so similar.

I'm pretty sure that way back in this thread, someone pointed out that Marusczcyk actually have [or at least, can offer] TWO levels of 'roast' to their roasted maple necks - the dark one shown in the configurator, and a lighter variant which I believe was called "caramel", if I remember rightly.

Of course, this isn't mentioned anywhere in the configurator as an option, or even a note - I think it was an "If you know, you know" option.

Judging by the sofa shot, you ended up with a caramel maple neck, with what I would class as a mild flame [at least by M's usual flame standards].

The fretboard, however? I'm going to be very generous and also classify it as "caramel"... but there's no denying it is not as depicted in the configurator.

Personally, I think you were right to raise the issue with Adrian and ask for a replacement neck and fretboard that has the more representative roasted flame maple.

It's a great looking configuration, by the way. It'll look stunning once the darker woods are on it :thumbsup:

Was the fretboard supposed to be roasted?

I also purchased a roasted maple neck and didn’t think it was roasted when it arrived. Working through my reseller, Adrian verified it was indeed roasted, but said ‘there are several people who are roasting and the outcome is dependent on (besides their personal style) on the wood itself as well as what's the "look" of the rest of the bass’ (not an exact quote).

It sounds like if you want a dark roast, it’s important to specify it in advance. It’s unfortunate, but hopefully this is helpful for future orders.

I think their roasting procedures could definately be upgraded. There’s many companies doing roasted maple (Sadowsky, EBMM) and they seem to get very similar results from one bass to another, even with their cheaper lines.

While I’m interested in trying a roasted maple neck on a future bass, I’ve always been turned off by the very dark roasting of Maruszczyk, at least on the configurator. That’s why I ordered my first (now sold) Maru with vintage tinted flame neck, non roasted.

My second order (due in a month) will be with non-roasted bidseye neck and board. I too agree their birdseye stock is not as great as their flame stock but I really prefer birdseye over flame so I’m taking a chance and crossing fingers!

I think plain maple looks way better with many body color than roasted maple. Tobacco burst for example…

If you are choosing a Walnut burl top , you can request to see some pics of available tops to chose from. Adrian is usually good about sending you pics of top woods available if requested and then you can pick one you like. :thumbsup:
