Wow, nice!! I'll definitely give this a try. Haha, if this works out for me too, I just might give getting a Wenge/Wenge MTD a shot since the string life/compression thing was my main concern.
And by the way, do you guys know if this works the same or will work properly for coated strings? (Namely DR Black Beauties since that's what I have on my Roscoe currently)
And from your guys' experience do the strings "after" treatment last just as long as a new set of the same kind of set before having to re-do the alcohol treatment again?
[Sorry if this is going too off topic from MTDs, but since it might be useful to other people as well..
Coated strings I have no idea if the string cleaning will work or harm them, but on regular stainless strings, they come back to about 95% of new. On fretted basses, eventually (2 or 3 cleanings) they don't come back, fret marks and such, but on fretless they last a lot longer.
Strings get stiff and wierd when they get old - you'll first notice a pronounced change in the midrange, even before the treble goes.
And personally I haven't noticed a difference between denatured alcohol @ $17.00 a litre, and methyl hydrate @ $3.00 a litre. You have to sign a waiver and jump through hoops where I live to get the denatured stuff because I guess the druggies use it to make crack or meth or some such horrid concoction.

After many long months of waiting, my new fretless arrived yesterday afternoon, and it was worth the wait. Unfortunately, my wife learned of some family coming into town at the last minute so I had to pick up the bass and shove it in the corner until today. I have to say that the smell of a brand new MTD trumps new car smell anyday (I slept with the bass on the floor next to my side of the bed last night...the scent was soothing
).
Anyway, here are some specs before the pics:
**Fretless 635
**Unlined ebony board
**Maple neck
**Chambered Mahogany Body
**Blackened Redwood Top
**Wenge/Purpleheart Veneers
**MTD World Logo
**Piezo Bridge
**Single Bart pickup in the sweet spot with Bart preamp
And the sound...
Well, I haven't been able to spend a lot of time playing it, but what little time I did have was awesome. The piezo system adds a lot to the tone, and the single sweet spot pickup solves the problem (IMO, a problem) of trying to dial in nice tones on a fretless (bridge pickup is too nasally and the neck pickup is too bassy). I can get some great mwah, all the way to some nice upright tones by soloing the piezo and playing around with the preamp. Just a great bass and a definite keeper.
Here is some eye candy. I know that I'm a crappy photographer, and some of the shots might seem like repeats...but...well, I don't think I posted this many pics of either one of my kids when they were born.

well, glenn talked to mike this morning and remnded him to take a pic of him holding the bass before it ships, so as soon as it's completed, i'll at least have something for everyone to drool over until i can take a few of my own i do have the body posted up around here, somewhere, from several weeks ago
