The Official MTD USA Thread

Sounds like he particularly likes mahogany/redwood + maple/ebony for fretless. Makes sense to me, the mahogany should give a strong, but tight bottom-end, even mids and a singing top-end. And I guess the maple neck and ebony board will contribute an even, clear tone with nice snap and a bit of tightness.

I WANT ONE!!! :)

EG

it does. And I have one. Incredible bass, and extremely versatile. Have fooled many people into thinking it's a fretted bass.

there's a tutorial somewhere around here about refinishing Bartolini pickups...you might want to do a search before you permanently seal anything in.

Did some searching, couldn't find it. Could you find it and post a link? You might remember just enough specifics to make the highly limited TB search capability work better for finding this.

Hey everyone, got a question..My MTD 535 is just over a year old now and and the pups are starting to look funky under the strings? Is this normal. I've owned other basses with Bart pups and 2 other MTD 535's that were built in the late 1990's and never noticed this on those. I don't play hard but I play alot. Any idea whats happening to the casing?

Also, and this is more my fault..I was cleaning the bass with a bit of Lemon oil per Mikes suggestion and I think I may have got some on the inner adge of the pups. It looked fine after I cleaned her up but the next morning at church I noticed the pup casing was discolored on the inner edge..almost "White" looking? Anyone else run into this and what did you do to corredct it if possible? I think the lemon oil interacted with what ever the pickup casing is made out of.

I know this is more of a generic pup question but I thought I'd ask here with the MTD folk:)

Thanks!

So Mike recommends lemon oil for the body wood? How often?

Lemon oil is recommended for cleaning, and Mike recommends Butcher's Wax for polishing and protecting the finish. I don't use lemon oil because the Dunlop oil that I have is a concentrated version and I don't want to risk it, but I do polish with the wax every now and then. It works great but you have to really put some elbow grease into it to make sure you buff out all the excess wax. Hope that helps.

+1 This is all correct.

Let me just add (per Mike's advice) - do NOT use butcher's wax on wenge. It will get in the deep grain of the wood. Only use lemon oil on wenge.

No new pictures. I like this thread when there's only text....

Yay, I don't have to go look at Wishbasses now!

I guess I need to shoot a couple new pics of my two 535's and post them up. Have to keep up with you guys, you know... sort of... :)

That would be nice! :)

It would be very nice indeed!

Be sure to get some side shots...I love the 2 dark contrasting woods on yours....like an Oreo (except you can't eat it)

....Or maybe you can?, I dunno :ninja:

635-24, ash body, ash neck, birdseye board, quilted or spalted quilted maple top (waiting on pictures of tops until I decide, Mike has to cut some boards). Options I'm thinking about are gold hardware, a grey finish (like bubby lewis' bass), and a ramp. Also gonna have the matching headstock and trussrod cover, and the globe logo. The wait is gonna KILL ME!
