The Official MTD USA Thread

The best way to describe it is "thick". I've played about 10 MTD's thanks to Vic and Tom Bowlus, and most of them had a high end that i found myself cutting a ton to get to where I wanted tonally. I tend to go for more of a vintage style tone, and this particular bass fits me just right! While this bass sounds a bit more traditional, it still maintains that MTD attack that I enjoy.

I'll do my best to get some clips recorded today or tomorrow and get them up for you guys to hear so you can see what I mean.
That reminds me of the one Saluki had for a while, which also had a rosewood board. I really think that's a big part of it with this particular bass... just seemed to be a lot more towards the "Fendery" type sound, which I really really liked.

+1 This bass piqued my interest when it came up for sale and I'm really curious about how it sounds.

I'm guessing that you mean the 635...

I played it yesterday at two services. WT800 running through a 2x10 Goliath and 1x15 SOB. Sounded great. Tons of punch. My drummer was digging it.

Killer tone. The Korina/Wenge/Wenge combo seems to have a bit more mid punch than my old 535 with the Tulip/Wenge/Wenge. But it is very similar to that tone. My old 535 had a bit more scooped sound in the mids, this one seems to be more focused. The solo bridge tone on my old 535 with the poplar body was much more "nasal" sounding and I avoided using it too much. The bridge tone on this 635 sounds less nasal and more full. I played most of the mass panned slightly toward the bridge, flat on the bass, a slight mid bump with the switch boosting the 250k range and the treble boosted a bit. It had a nice cutting clean tone. I'm really digging it so far.

Plays great, neck is nice and straight. I love Mike's necks. I really missed my MTD 535 when I traded it. I was hoping for a 635 when I put it up for trade, but I got an nice offer on another bass and took that and then a few trades later I finally ended up with the 635.

Thanks for the descriptions Josh and jw. On a side note, I've decided to replace the ash neck on my ash/walnut/ash/maple 535 with a maple/maple neck. While there is a lot I like about the ash/maple neck, I'm thinking that the maple/maple will give me more of what I'm looking for: a little more fundamental punch and less grind. We'll see...

Does anyone else have their MTD on order and is waiting IMPATIENTLY!:hyper: Four more months for me!

I placed an order for two 535's back in September. One fretted, one fretless. I'm actually not minding the 7 months or so to go so much. It's allowing me to generate a little more cash towards this significant purchase.

I know I'll hear a choir of angels and see light radiating out of the cases when I open them.

Wow, nice! Quick flip tho... jeez, ya just got it. :hmm:
Yeah, along with two others! I currently have four 535s and I have another in the works so it's time to do some trimming. A big part of me will be sorry to see that one go but I really can't keep them all. I was also considering selling my ash/ash but I've decided to have Mike make me a maple/maple neck as a replacement. I like the ash for some stuff (sounds amazing on record) but live I think I'll enjoy a maple neck more. I'll give a report once the switch has been made in February just in case anyone's curious.

Wow - over a month between posts on this thread. Weird. I'll be heading down to visit Mike next week for that new neck fitting. Should be a pretty drive with all of the snow. Anyway, Merry Christmas MTDers! Have a safe and happy weekend!

I envy you bass12....i wish i can join you to mike's workshop :crying:
Mike is currently working on my custom mtd flamed ash top/black limba/wenge/BEM. This time i asked for a super slim "knifey" feel neck Glenn of ABT was talking about on one of his mtd 635 he has for sale on his website.

That sounds like a very cool combination. I'm not at all familiar with flamed ash. Regarding the neck profile - one of my 535s definitely has a slimmer neck profile than the others I've played and I love it. Makes sense though - Mike works the necks by feel so no two are exactly alike. As for the santa suit: hmmm - I'll see if I can spot any elves hiding in the shadows...

That's a killer buckeye, Joel - and I'm not a buckeye lover! I really like the way the top lightens up towards the fingerboard - it makes for a nice transition between the buckeye and the maple. I'll be at Mike's tomorrow so if that bass is still there I might get to see her in person. :)
