The Official MTD USA Thread

That's a killer buckeye, Joel - and I'm not a buckeye lover! I really like the way the top lightens up towards the fingerboard - it makes for a nice transition between the buckeye and the maple. I'll be at Mike's tomorrow so if that bass is still there I might get to see her in person. :)

Cool. You'll see it before I do! You're welcome to play it if it's there.

Mike is the best. Give him a hug from me. Seriously. :D

Hey, tell him Vic said "hey" too, and I'll see him at NAMM as usual. :)

I'll tell Mike Joel and Vic said "hi". Thanks for the offer on first try, Joel, but I'll give you the honour! It will be nice to see that beauty in person, though! This will be my third trip to Mike's shop and so far each time has been a really pleasant experience.

Cool. Thanks man.

It looks like my bass may have shipped yesterday, so you may have just missed it. Oh well, I'm sure they'll be plenty of great looking stuff at the shop for you to check out.

Enjoy the trip!

I might be putting my 535-21 Marilyn up for sale in the UK, but will entertain shipping internationally. If anyone from the "club" is keen drop me a PM. The ad will probably go up in the next few weeks (assuming I'm not too lazy!).
GAH! Say it isn't so!

Somebody needs to jump on that. All Mike's works are unique, but these are particularly rare and special.

I was just playing mine the other day... I don't play it very often, and I've been looking for a way to trim my herd a bit. I have a pretty strict rule that, if I'm not rotating it fairly regularly, it goes. M8 is the singular exception, and after playing it again, it remains so. For the most part tho, I still prefer my ash/walnut 535. That bass just fits me better than any other 535 I've ever played. All the time spent with Mike working on specs and finding just the right pieces of wood really paid off.

I am thinking of putting that Marylin up and my Sadowsky NYC PJ4. I don't need to sell them, but I think its a waste to ahve that much money tied up in basses when I'm not gigging (and I will still have my ash/ash MTD (which I love) a Ritter and my Kennedy 6 with an ACG on the way). It is an amazing bass though and if it doesn't sell, given that I don't need to sell it, I won't be too disappointed! :)

If you don't mind me being so bold, I'd suggest you hang on to that Marilyn until after you get to spend time with those others, and then make a selection. You might possibly find, given a bit of time, one of them might be more of a cull than that Marilyn.

That said, nobody knows you better than you, but that's what I'd do, anyway. That Marilyn will be very difficult to replace if you have a change of heart.

Anyway, IMHO/FWIW.

The only more replaceable bass than the Marilyn is the MTD 535 Ash/Ash which gets the most playing time! :D

The Ritter is too expensive to replace (the finish alone costs as much as a Sadowsky NYC) and the Kennedy 6 was my 21st birthday present and the guy is impossible to get a hold of / get new basses from (yes, it's that good).

To be honest I am not sure it will sell (in the UK) since the used market is pretty bad here for high spec basses, so I am pretty confident that I will be keeping it. I keep flip flopping between selling the basses and just holding on to them. You may have swayed me again! (Damn my wife's expensive handbag collection! :D )

Hey this bass is hollowbody? it's me or it looks very thick?

Well, I visited the "candy shop" today and passed on both Vic's and your good wishes. Sure enough, your bass had already shipped so I didn't have the pleasure of getting a first hand viewing. There were, however, some other beauties "hanging around" the shop. Wow - just makes me want to buy them all (which on my "salary" is a laughable idea!). While I was at the shop I spoke with Mike and Charlie (Mike's assistant) about makore. They were raving about it and Mike let me play a makore-bodied bass that he'd just completed for NAMM (Vic - check it out when you're there, it's the one with the flame makore top). It sounded fantastic! A nice balance of smooth and aggressive with very clear tone across the spectrum. Anyway, I have to say once again that Mike and Charlie are a real class act. Just so down-to-earth and pleasant to deal with. Makes me even happier to be playing MTDs.

Will do! Thanks for the tip! :)

Wow, the bass came out better than I could have even expected. I've done a few buckeye MTD's in the past but this one exceeds them all. It's a work of art. I hand picked everything and am elated with the results.

Even the side dots are beautiful! Mike killed it on this one! :bassist:

These are some quick photos. I'll get better ones this weekend. The top is amazing -- it's very 3D.

The bass sounds exactly like I wanted. I honestly could not be happier with it.
