The Official MTD USA Thread

Wow, the bass came out better than I could have even expected. I've done a few buckeye MTD's in the past but this one exceeds them all. It's a work of art. I hand picked everything and am elated with the results.

Even the side dots are beautiful! Mike killed it on this one! :bassist:

These are some quick photos. I'll get better ones this weekend. The top is amazing -- it's very 3D.

The bass sounds exactly like I wanted. I honestly could not be happier with it.
(amazing pics)
WOW! Man, I've never been much into buckeye, but your top could convert me! And that board just looks like "clouds of birdseye"... a-friggin'-mazing! :)

Very nice, Joel! Take away one string, and you'd really have something, there! :D
HUSH YOU! ;) :)

Got my top picked out! Three more months! :hyper::hyper::D:D

Did you pick that out today? I looked at all of Mike's quilt maple bookmatches yesterday and considered what looks like the one you chose (there were actually two bookmatches that looked like the picture you posted). If we're talking about the same tops I can tell you that the quilt on that piece is VERY nice in person. You won't be disappointed!

Thanks guys! It really is great to be so happy about a custom bass. I've had the opposite happen too - where you finally get it and you're sort of underwhelmed.

Not this time!

Bass looks great Joel! That BEM is exquisite - and you got the Luminlay position markers! Nice one.

These Luminlay's rock! They're very cool. They take a millisecond to charge -- and they look beautiful.

Yeah, I picked it out today. He gave me nine choices and I stared at them all for hours trying to decide. It'll be finished in a black fade similar to bubby lewis' bass.

It's really cool when the stage lights activate them. At first I figured, "yeah, right, another gimmick". Then I played a show in a small theatre where the lights went out between some of the songs. Because of the stage lighting, though, the Luminlays were activated and I knew where to place my fingers for the next song without having to guess. It also looked really cool to have a pitch black stage with just the position markers glowing!

Awesome! So stage lighting can activate them too (without using the LED flashlight)? That makes them even cooler!

Well, it depends on what kind of lights are being used. I don't remember what kind of light activates the marker material but I know that they are designed partially with that in mind (that certain stage lights can activate the markers).

Here's a little NYE love...

Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay. Great gig. Cocktail jazz up front, some R&B and smooth jazz in the middle, and dance/pop/disco as the night wore on. It got really loud in there...dance floor packed with happy folk and their various noisemakers, so here are a coupla' clips from the first set. #1763, ash/walnut, ash/maple. Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 & Bergantino HT112ER. Everything flat & centered on the bass, volume @ ~ 6/10. Everything flat & centered on the amp, except for pre-gain @ 7/10. Tweeter @ 10 o'clock on the cab.

Good to see you playing the MTD (I noticed you've been gravitating towards Roscoes lately). Such a classy looking bass and it sounds great!

Thanks, fellas. I do love this bass. I've actually been playing my Lull basses more than anything else lately - although there is a new Roscoe J on the way. :ninja: This gig called for a bit of everything, including covering some guitar parts and a few tunes with (God forbid) some slap playing. :D Since the stage was so tight (ridiculously so, really) it was definitely a one-bass hit. The MTD fit the bill perfectly.

Hey Jerry. Nice to see you are still gigging. Things here in Philly are a little slow right now, but hopefully things will pick up in 2011. I see you are playing the MTD. I have been playing mine a lot more lately, I too have other basses, but the MTD seems to always be my go to bass, when I need just one bass for the gig. I too have the HT112 er; killer little cab. I couldn't open the clips, but I think it's my computer that's the problem. Take care "my brother from another mother."

Virgil! I hope you're well, my friend. You know, this gig was a reminder of just how great this bass plays and sounds. I've been using five-string J basses on so many gigs these days, but this gig required a sixer. It's definitely all bark and all bite, but is remarkably flexible.

Looking at my gig log, I had 54 hits last year. I'm somewhat embarrassed to say I only used this bass on three of them. Were it any other bass I'd be thinking of selling it for that reason alone, but this one is special.

Here's hoping for a very busy 2011!

Last Wednesday I received this "awesome" bass, MTD 535 ash body with walnut top, maple/maple board and neck. Had a chance to play it at church today, my rig is GK MB2 500 head powering peavey cab. Oh my, this bass "SMOKES", this was a great purchase from a great TBer!! Here's a body shot of it....along with the rest of the crew:hyper:
