The Official MTD USA Thread

Well, my MTD 535 landed yesterday and I got to plug it in for a bit last night. Just wow.

What a thing of beauty. Great articulate tone, lightweight and perfectly balanced, VERY ergonomic and looks killer.

Thru my Jule Monique preamp and 2 Berg AE210's, it sounds just killer.

I A/Bed it against my new Spector USA 5er and my Modulus Q5 and all 3 basses sound great..... But the 535 really does stand out!

Pics to come later today!

Congratulations. Well, you know the TB saying... no pic, no bass :D

No biggie, but they don't call it a "Kingston" unless it's the import model. I know it says Kingston on the back of the headstock, but that's not part of the product name. Just FYI.

VERY nice!!! You commented on the weight... do you know what it actually weighs yet? If not, any postal, UPS, or Fedex location can tell you for free (if you don't have a decent scale of your own, anyway). Just curious.

So some Kingstons are made in the USA? That seems confusing....

Not to my knowledge.

I think the only confusing crossover model is the Saratoga (J bass). All the x3x's (535, 534, 635, 435, etc) are all the USA models. It's just that Mike always signs "Kingston NY" on the back of the headstock for where it was built (since I believe his shop has moved at least twice in its history). But it's not part of the product name, or at least product series name, where with the imports, it is. They even have their own website.

I visited Mike's shop last month and it is indeed in Kingston, NY. It's nestled in a lovely section of the Catskill Mountains which should be ablaze in fall colors now.

You will find the MTD model, the serial # , his signature and Kingston, NY USA on the back of the American Series basses headstock.

I have had David W.'s MTS 535 for a few days now and I am blown away.

I was a little worried about buying this sight unseen as it is the most expensive bass I have ever bought and I had concerns the high price was partially due to the "coffee table" look/construction and crazy woods.

In any case, it is absolutely killer. Pays itself basically, looks incredible (better in person), is light and sounds amazing. Mike T. and the MTD team are incredible luthiers to say the least and I have ZERO buyers remorse on this one!

The bass is poplar/myrtle burl/wenge whice is a terrific sounding and looking combo.

Here are a few pics....

With my new Spector Forte and current amp setup (the Mesa D180 isn't used much anymore. We are redoing the basement so yes, I know it is a mess!

Great looking bass, Baird6869. I was drooling over that one when David (who also sold me my first 535) had it listed. It matches your carpet very nicely, too. :D

Thx!

My basement hallway.... The floor looks nice..... The really creepy art is out of picture range luckily!

I am pumped with this bass.... It is light also..... Under 8lbs!

I also pinged MikeT asking for a copy of the build letter..... He personally sent it within a couple hours! Pretty cool!

Under 8 lbs? Are you sure? That's Sadowsky NYC weight! I don't think I've ever heard of an MTD being that light before. Wow. :)

I would call it 8lbs right on. Might be 8.2 max as i am using a normal bathroom scale. I was shocked.

Definately not 9-10 like I was expecting.
If you're gonna' talk decimals, you really need to take it to a postal scale. It won't change the way the bass feels to you if you discover it actually weighs different than your post, but just for the sake of posting the correct weight anyway. For some folks that's pretty important stuff... like a major purchasing factor. Bathroom scales are just not calibrated to do these low weights, so they're really not a good way to do it if you really wanna' know.

FWIW anyway.

+1. You would be surprised at how far off even a newer digital bathroom scale can be on the lower weights

It always irks me slightly when folks will put up an expensive bass for sale on TB and claim that the reason they can't provide weight specifications is that they don't have a working scale at home. How far away is your local post office?!! :p
