The Official MTD USA Thread

UPDATE: My 1995 MTD 535 Korina body, Wenge neck/fingerboard with the 19mm bridge spacing remains unchanged!! After talking with the technician at the guitar shop it was decided that the bridge change to this bass was not in the best interest for this bass.
Now, who needs a brand new Hipshot Style B .708?

Hi guys!
So a year ago I was way too stupid to trade (for fodera) my ash/maple/maple 535-21. It didnt take long to me to understand that i didnt like the fodera (monarch 4 w, emg pj) as much as i loved my MTD.

So i was browsing internet and found a 635-24 used that looked awesome and had almost the same woods. Only difference in woods is that the 635 had ash neck and rose of mountain top. My 535 didnt have any top. How does the ash neck compare to maple neck? How much does the topwood affect the tone?

Oh, and I bought the 635 without trying... Just waiting it to arrive... Lol

I am interested why it was not in the best interest for your 535... because I am considering the same thing—replace the original 19 mm with a 18 mm bridge.

Just curious if anyone has information on the marilyn series basses? Interested in your experience tone gig wide etc. One of interest. Chambered mahogany body, Audi redwood burl top, ebony board maple neck, piezo system. Does Mike still make these?
I knew of someone asking him maybe this time last year and he said that he would...no more Audi redwood though...I actually think he got dibs on that specific stash of redwood and Audi bought the rest and put it into their steering wheels and dashboards...mahogany and ebony sound wonderful though and I'm sure whatever redwood he has will work..it just won't be that "blackened water cured" whatever...

@JesseMalaska That 635 sounds great..I had a 535 with the same specs..what a beautiful bass, just WAY too bright sounding for me and my ears the notes jumped off with a quicker attack, but the inherent treble was killing me ..I had to find a more mellow combo that worked for me....if "bright and tight" is what you're looking for, that's what you're gonna get with that bass...

Carlis, there were a couple of concerns that I had to consider: 1) the replacement bridge is smaller than the installed one, which would leave some wood finishing work to do. 2) the tone of the bass would be altered, either to my liking or not. 3) a resale would be impacted since MTD basses are known for being 19MM. 4) do I really want to make this change to this bass(?).
However, the technician did suggest looking for 18mm saddles to fit the current bridge, which I will do, but not change out the bridge.

Look at MTD web site. Tag Marilyn , and mine will appear. Just what Mike described. Acoustic, and focused. My best bass!

1) barely as in negligible. 2) Not if it's an aluminum bridge like the original. 3) keep the 19mm bridge and reinstall it before you post it for sale.

1) Enough to be a concern. 2) None the less a change. 3) It's not worth all the re-drilling nor the extra expense.
I trust the technician advised me from experience. ;)

Isn't it just a hipshot B style bridge that can be easily replaced with another one of a different spacing configuration?

Wohoo! NBD!

My new (used) 635-24. Ash body, ash neck and maple fretboard. Rose on the mountain top. I just changed the strings and adjusted it to my liking. So far i am amazed. First 6-stringer that feels really easy to play! It almost feels like im playing 5-string...

Mine is 1995. The new Hipshot Style B .708 is not the same size nor have the same mounting holes configuration as the type of bridge that's on this bass. From what I understand the newer 535 basses are using Hipshot Style B bridges. If you own a model with a Hipshot Style B 19mm I would think your concerns are different from mine.
