The Tale ends with...... The Guy was with his NEXT Girlfriend just days later. That's how he makes a living. Always have one waiting in the Wings......kinda' like Bass Players are with needing an endless Supply of Supreme Basses....or Ladies and their "Shoe Thing" ...Which is perfectly OK...as we all know. :)

After re-reading my last reply it's MEGA important to me that one point be VERY Clear in EVERY word / post that I write. Many Males STILL feel that Female Bass Players are, somehow, Inferior. It's important to me and probably to most of YOU, that my Comment about the Shoes in NO WAY reflects on my Personal Feeling about Women. .... especially Female Bass Players. Are we REALLY Clear on that?

I love the tone of Bartolinis and I'm very intrigued by these "Super" pickups.

The basses that come with those have a similar pickup spacing to my Sadowsky Modern... does anyone know if MTD sells these pickups separately?

I'd love to get a pair and test drive them in mine.

I RESPECTFULLY ask this question cuz I don't know the answer. I've only recently returned to TalkBass, and quite enjoy it, after being driven NUTS by insane 12 year olds who knew everything. :) It's nice to see that the 12 year olds are now Gray Hairs who have broken backs and aren't afraid to ask questions. . Is Daniel Tobias in here answering MTD Questions? How about anyone from Bartolini? Although I was one of Mike's first "Factory Reps", I made the biggest mistake of my life, left him, and went to work for Fender. Dana B. Goods might have the answer to this question as well.

Mike and Dan are of the camp that believe that a bass should have a certain amount of weight (density) for the tone they prefer. That being said, I had them build my 534 to be under 9lbs and it's the lights MTD I've ever played but has just as big guts as my 10lb 634 and Saratoga.

Daniel doesn't answer questions on Talkbass (at least as far as I know) but he and his father are great at answering via email or phone.

I don't think they normally sell those custom MTD/Bartolini pickups separately, but it's worth asking. I know a couple of MTD owners who have installed Super pickups in regular 535/635s after the fact, so in at least those two cases they did buy the pickups separately. But I definitely haven't seen anyone install them in a non-MTD, and I don't know if Mike and Dan would sell for that purpose. Worth asking though!

Regarding weight, here are my $0.019:

Cats refer to tone related to weight, and when you are talking one of Mike’s basses, most of us do associate the construction with tonal variance. Though, the reality is that perhaps it’s more of a “feel” variance vs actual tone; because the different constructions may “sound different” when you play them; but, when you listen back to tape, the differences are a bit less apparent. So, let’s not get caught up in this dichotomy.

IME, heavier instruments tend to have a more solid basis to the tone. So, players, like Marcus Miller, who want that super solid feel because of their preferred style, go for the heavier instruments. For that purpose heavier = better. Lighter instruments tend to have more sense of resonance in the feel and tone, so players in the Jaco/pizz school or chordal players looking for that classical guitar resonance look for lighter instruments. For those players lighter = better. And I’m sure there are other prefs; but those are a couple of boundaries.

Mike is aware of these preferences and will work with his player/ customers to make what they are seeking. This is the advantage of commissioning a build with Mike and working with him. But, you need to know what to ask for.

Ultimately, there is no “best.” It’s on the player to understand the preferences. I like my basses in the middle of things around 9 pounds, and that’s what Mike is working on right now. Can’t wait. BTW, both Mike and Daniel are fantastic cats to work with. Real treasures in our community.

I’ve always found that ash has an inherent tonal quality that I love. I’m no tonal expert, but it’s a bump in the mids and a tight punch that I miss in basses with other body woods. And that doesn’t just go for MTD, I’ve always disliked alder jazz basses, but when I played one with an ash body, I bought one. On the other side, I have a mahogany KZ5, and I find it to be a little thin for me at times. Again, I’m no expert, but maybe it’s the density/weight of the wood that gives it the tone that we’re drawn to/shy away from?
