The Official MTD USA Thread

If anyone is looking for a very reasonable addition to the herd, I've been eyeing this one for a while but can't get the go-ahead from the Mrs. It's bare-bones but it's the cheapest USA MTD I've ever seen.

No connection to the seller.

Good people, my brain tells me I've seen something from MTD's shop that I cannot find with much Googling. I swear I've seen a US bass with a fade finish that went from an almost black, very dark and deep purple to a deep indigo blue. Not that more ocean blue color, not even a Norm Stockton type blue, but like a dark jewel tone blue. I've checked their IG and FB accounts, no luck. Has anyone seen this bass and can link to a pic??

You may be having a (bad) flashback to this thread from a few yrs ago. I think it was a purple fade.

$25,000.00 MTD????

Sean , on my Norm I had them go extra blue so it wouldn’t be so teal in the middle. Unless it is in bright lighting, it looks very dark on the edges to an indigo like you are describing. Here it is on the table with adequate light. Darker than most Norm’s.

I'd seen the top one in my search, but I'm beginning to think my mind is playing tricks on me and I maybe haven't seen exactly what I think I remember. The bottom one has a nice gradient that involves all 3 colors I mentioned - I think I can use one or both to illustrate different facets of my concept. Thanks for posting!

Ok I need to get my money ready..
When I am ready.. I will ask if it can be 3 pickups :>

Re. 3-pickups: Maybe, but only with a master volume (no blend control). Usually that sort of configuration would involve having coils and/or pickups cut from the signal (rotary selector type). If you retain full functionality of all three pickups independently (single, series, parallel), you're bound to get some "wasted settings" with a few unusable sounds with volume jumps and phase issues. Great concept, just hope you and team Tobias can both be happy with the outcome as they *definitely* do care.

The answer isn't always the same for everyone, but yes, it has been done a few times: traditional pickup location (not stacked like the Super series), with the splittable coils/Super configured preamp.

My 535 has the Super pickups in the traditional location and the Super pre with splittable coils. I don't know what your tonal goals are, but it's hard to imagine a more versatile arrangement. I can get pretty much anything I want out of it. I'm not sure what purpose a third pickup would serve.

As my understanding, the super 5 has a Ken smith-ish sound .. and the pickups are very close to the bridge
So there should be plenty of space for a front pickup in tradition position..for a more p-ish sound than why not?

I would either use each pickup separately (series/parallel) or 1+3(traditional JJ more 70s feel in single)/2+3(KS solo tone in parallel)

Crazy all in one
May be I just get spoiled by the J+M setting on my Saratoga..

I agree with you on that.

My only hang up lately is the pre amp or the pickups not cooperating with effects. Has anyone changed out one or the other, and had good results with effects?

Ah, I see. I've never played a Super5. It would be interesting to hear what sort of feedback you get from Tobias on your concept.

I noted that you had mentioned that in a previous post. Is it one specific effect you're having trouble with? I've only been using compressors with mine. The only adjustment I've made was to turn up the MTD preamp gain in order to drive them a little harder.

I have been trying to work in some octave and synth. All I get are these weird harmonics and echo effects, and zero fuzz and crunch from any overdrive or fuzz pedals. Mean while with a passive bass they sounds great.
