P Bass + Mark Bass Head + Schroeder Cab, it's true what's not to like?
I now run the cab with the angled 12" downfacing, no difference FOH but a better on stage sound to my ears.
What is that cab? I notice it has different porting than the older ones ... a cutout along the bottom, top, and side it looks like. Perhaps to make up for less cutout in the usual spot due to the larger tweeter? Any idea what that's about or what the sonic difference may be? Those HAL2000-looking tweeters are kinda cool ... should be painted red.
I recently assembled my Schroeders and played CD's through 'em. By doing this, I take the human factor out of the equation and the A/B'ing is easier and more immediate therefore any differences are more likely to be heard and not imagined.
I did this through an LMII, on which I used the VPF - for those who don't know, it's a filter on the LMII that boosts lows and highs while cutting mids, though I'm unsure of the exact frequencies offhand - to find at which setting the cabs sounded best/flat for recorded music. Not that this has anything to do with sitting my basses/playing in a band mix, but I was curious. I was just thinking, if I was gonna DJ a backyard party with these things or when they're used as the sound system for hotel parties when gigging out of town, how would I set 'em?
Tweeters were on about 1/4.
The 1212R sounded surprisingly good as a "stereo speaker" with the LMII set flat and the VPF around 30-50%. On the 21012L I basically left the amp settings "flat" with filters off and it sounded really good. KJung has said that the 21012L is reasonably full-range & balanced, and it sounded that way to me too in this experiment. I'm not saying it's a magic box, sounds as good as an Acme or whatever, just saying it didn't sound bad as I'd expect a bass cab to (without at least serious EQ'ing) in this application.
That's about it. Just sharing a small bit of insight I gained. I still don't know why some say they dislike the sound of these as stand-alone. Sure, the smaller boxes like my 1212R needs some tweaking to sound full-range (if that even matters for bass playing? it sure doesn't to me) but even playing recorded music through it I found it quite easy to find a setting that sounded not as good as my fancy home stereo, but better than many sources I'm exposed to (most car decks, radios, low-fi MP3's, "ghetto blasters", elevators, restaurant or club PA's, etc.).
It's a 1212L with Celestions. As to the differences sonically between that and the older design I'm afraid I can't hep you.

I had bought a 1212L when Jorg was transitioning from the Eminence to the Celstion speakers. Was sent a new 1212L with the Eminence neos and I blew both (imagine that!!!), Jorg being THE man sent me two new new Celestions, no questions asked, as replacements. Jorg told me the Celestions will handle more power and they definitely sound rounder/fuller with a bit more lower end than the Eminences. And while I have sold off one of my 1212Ls it was to fund a 1215L which should be with me in a couple weeks or so...can't wait!

I recently got one of the new Celestion neos that Jorg is using. God bless his stellar good quick service. Anyway, I thought it'd be interesting to compare it to a non-neo, speficially whatever is in my old 1212R.
I tried the 4 Ohm neo Celestion as well as a 4 Ohm neo from a Mesa Scout combo and an 8 Ohm regular old ceramic Schroeder (Eminence?) ceramic in my Schroeder Mini 12. I played a CD through it and recorded it, matched the volume in the computer and listened.
The regular speaker was very noticeably warmer than the neos. I was quite surprised at the difference. Obivously magnets don't make sound, so maybe it's the way the speakers are meant to be voiced, etc. etc. but in this small sample the regular speaker was much more pleasant/warm sounding no doubt or power of suggestion about it. Perhaps nothing you couldn't adjust with EQ or that'd stand out in a busy mix, I admit.
I tried the Celestion 4 Ohm neo in the front and then the inside of the 1212R. End result is I liked it best with the neo on the inside so now it's a 2.67 Ohm 1212R/L. Sounds better as just an "R" for recorded music, but lifts much easier and sounds great for bass as an R/L. I use either a Walkabout or Carvin with it, so the 2.67 rating ain't a problem. The balance of the louder & more brittle 4 Ohm neo on the inside with the warmer 8 Ohm ceramic front-firing is a great match to my ears. Perhaps a better overall sonic balance than before, I think. Did a covers gig with it, ranging from reggae to soul & pop and it all sounded wonderful. Damn loud and deep for such a small cab too.
Possibly Win-ISP or some knowledgable speaker/cabs guys will say I've done something profoundly stupid, but I really like the result, and I like the sound of my Mini 12 better with the 8 Ohm ceramic in it so that's a win/win for me and the 10-12 lbs or so I'm saving (holy moly is that Celestion ever light!!) makes a big difference for me on the carry.

Where's that electric screwdriver!?!?!? I just replaced the speakers in my 1010R with the new celestion neo's and had never thought of trying one of each. I still have the originals so this would be a simple experiment. I was going to open the cab up anyway for inspection because I am getting some distortion with the new speakers and need to investigate.
Man you said it ! I think I can almost see a difference in my right forearm after all the cab/speaker switching I've done the last few days. And boy, my 1212R - one of the first ones - is not an easy thing to take apart & put back together with that back panel and internal angled speaker. Damn solid box.
Do try it out. You might be very pleasantly surprised, given a 1010 might lack some guts especially with neos.
Distortion? Maybe you left some wires lying on a speaker or a screw loose?
